    Using the Steel Deck Diaphragm Desing Manual, the concrete increases the shear strength of the deck alone, so both would be working together. The Manual goes on to say that "insulating concrete" helps as well and publishes values somewhere between the deck alone and structural concrete-filled deck.

    Most of the UL rated floors involving composite metal deck include a steel beam w/ fireproofing as part of the assembly. Can the slab be supported by something other than a steel beam to be acceptable, for instance, a CMU, Light gage, or concrete wall? Is the beam a requirement for the assembly?
