    If the distance "a" is less than 3.5" it wouldn't need to be laterally supported at bearing points would it? I would think since this criteria wasn't considered for the conventional configuration for "a" being less than 3.5" than you wouldn't need to worry about this. Or am I wrong for thinking...

    I am analyzing a single plate shear connection with an axial load using AISC 13th edition. During my analysis I stumbled upon criteria 6 on page 10-103 which says "Ensure that the supported beam is braced at points of support" I am not sure what this is trying to say can anyone expound on this...
