Hi,
Is there a role of thumb for orientation of wood joists in tree storey building? I am thinking that floor joists oriented parallel with roof trusses makes sense from a lateral load resisting point and this orientation usually requires less load bearing walls but usually see them oriented...
I've had this thread in 'structural engineering other topics', but no replies. I hope for better response in this forum:
Am I right thinking that one place in Canada belongs to two different seismic zones if it has different Za and Zv values? And than, how and when would you differentiate in...
Am I right thinking that one place in Canada can be in two different seismic zones according to Za/Zv values? And than how and when would you differentiate in practice, what seismic zone would you assign to Ottawa for example(Za=4, Zv=2)?
I'm looking for screw fastener to be used in non-structural application of 3/4" plywood on top of 1-1/2", 20 gauge steel deck. A brand name, designation and other info would be appreciated.
What would be the best way to reinforce existing 2x12@16 c/c roof joists for additional point loads since only way to double the joist would be to install second ply in two shorter lengths (installation of full length joist is space restricted)? Could it be still considered as a built-up beam...
I was checking an old concrete slab for a heavier loading and found that the slab was well over designed at the time and very suitable for new loads. This’s got me thinking of the new limit state designs that structural engineers perform nowadays. What are margins of safety that you guys allow...
What is acceptable method to design two way slab for a concentrated load? Slab is 12'x15' continuous, with reinforced concrete walls along 12' span and concrete beams along 15' span. Does anybody have a good method of distributing a point load to two spans and any other suggestions would be...
How can existence of pressure relieve valves in floor of underground concrete tank be taken into account to lessen influence of high water table on walls of a tank? Should walls be designed for hydrostatic pressure of max WT anyway?
PCA publication 'Rectangular Concrete Tanks' calls for 'Upturned Key' between slab and wall as well as at construction joints. Can someone comment on reasoning for raised keys, could it be for better location of waterstop (higher above the plane of actual joint) or there are other reasons? Is it...
Working on municipal waste water treatment plant specifications for small town in cold Canadian climate. What is preferable structure type for settling tanks todays: steel or concrete; circular or rectangular; who are manufacturers of these structures; where can I find specs and any other...
What would be most commonly used pump running time for sizing of pressure tanks? Pump capacity will be in the range of 100 to 150 gpm. I have seen deferent numbers around, like 6x, 10x or not more than 25 times per hour pump cycle. Anybody knows a good literature/article or online catalogue on...
I am about to design a water supply to a plant. Peak water flow is 350 l/min, average flow is 200 l/min. The plant will operate 16 ours per day. The system will have two water wells; one will serve as a stand by. Both wells will have capacity around 150g/min. Water for fire requirements will be...
I'm supposed to design a storm water detention pond for 12ha/30acres Industrial Park. My experience with it = 0.
Any advice in terms of design procedure, publications and computer sowtware will be helpfull.
Does anyone have any experience in protecting fill during Canadian winter from freezing using straw or wood chips.
Would a foot or so on top of the fill help?
