we have received a pump casing casting from a foundry. it seems they did some weld repair on it.
The foundry did the hydro-test (1000PSI, 15mins) and it passed.
After we received the part and we redo the test after a few days.
It leaks around the weld repair.
What do you guys thinks. why it can...
I was working with ASME B31.3 for process piping before,
I am just wondering, for high pressure piping (~15,000 psi) used for shale oil fracking, what industry code is used?
Thanks.

For VFD driven water pumps, if the pumps will operate in different speeds, when the shop tests (like vibration) are requested, does the pump supplier need to do the test at different speed? Or just at the rated rpm?
I tried to find some reference but didn't find anything helpful in HI standard...
On many website, they list ASTM A995 Gr. 6A as an equivalent of Zeron or even as Zeron.
But when I check the chemical composition, it seems they are not exactly same.
ASTM A995 Gr. 6A
C-0.03%max,
Mn-1.0%max,
Si-1.0%.max,
S-0.025%max, (0.01% per Rolled Alloys Zeron 100)
P-0.030%max...
Self Venting vs Self priming, are they same concept?
When you look at a cross section of a centrifugal pump, how to determine if it is Self Venting / Self priming?
Thanks.
I am working with a local water pump company
I would like to implement the vibration test for our pumps.
As our pumps are multistage centrifugal pumps with different length and support stands(based on stages), currently the pumps are performance tested when they are only fasten to the motor...
Per my past experiences, it is normal practice to use threaded connection for seal flush plans in API pumps as per API 610 section 6.4.3.1, it clearly specifies that all auxiliary connection to pressure casing except the SEAL Gland shall be flange connection
my question is why seal gland...

Clearly the pump head is relevant with impeller tip speed, I am just wondering if there is a formular to estimate pump head by tip speed? Thanks

Some of the pumps come with only 1 accelerometer and some come with 2 in 90o degree.
can one accelerometer monitor two directions vibration on bearing house?
can it be used to determine Velocity and displacement?
thanks

Just started as an intermediate field engineer in a construction project in the USA.
during the offer negotiation, I was told there will be some overtime work and I will only get paid for 40 hours.
In the job offer letter, it states, 6 days per week and work up to 10 hours a day.
As the...
I am working on some Large ANSI pumps (slurry pumps) recently.
One question is about shimming the pump.
I suppose during the shipping, some baseplates are deflected. Thus when we check the soft foot for these pumps, many of them are beyond 2 mils.
Normally we use API 686 as a practice standard...
my contractor said there are no tools available to torque the bolts as is and ask for super nuts. What's that? Nuts work with smaller sockets?
Thanks

Working on API pump installation
1. As I know, most specs asked for 2 thou/ft as the levelling requirement
Is this requirement for pump mounting pads or also for gear unit and motor mounting pads?
2. How about the flatness requriement (within one mounting pad and between mounting pads?)
Is it...
For my current pumps, the bearing L10h just meets the API 610 requirement for max loads situation per 6.10.1.5.
But there are something about bearing system life per 6.10.1.6, which concerns me.
1. I am not sure if this section is a requirement or option, as there is a statement: "If...
I have worked as an mechanical engineer at an EPC company for oil & gas industry in Calgary for 4 years.
Recently I want to accumulate more direct experience with rotating equipment from the field.
I found related to mechanical engineering, there are several different positions on oil producer...
For vertical pumps, the plan 13 and 14 are both applicable. but in what condition people choose 14 instead 13 or what's the advantages for 14 compared to 13?
Thanks.

I am working with a Double Suction BB1 pumps with Flush Plan 13
As I suppose, one of the successful requirement for plan 13 is that the Stuffing Box Pressures is higher than the sunction pressure.
For double suction pumps, is that met?
Anyone knows how to calculate/estimate the Stuffing Box...
As I remembered there are some Minimum Nozzle Projection Requirement for Tanks Per API 650.
But I don't find any Minimum Nozzle Projection Requirement in ASME VIII Div.1.
Can anyone tell me a little bit more about that? Thanks.

PER API 610, 70%-120%of BEP for prefered operation range. But in our company's spec, it is preferred pump operation to the left of the BEP which means 70%-100%.
Any body can explain a little bit? Thanks.
