    Over-Torqued Bolts

We have some SA-193 Gr B7 bolts on flanges that we overtorqued. We torqued them to 450ft-lbs. Some of them streteched upto 3/8" over 8" long bolt rod. The vessel passed the test. However, we want to know whether the bolts need to replaced or over-torquing the bolts OK as long they don't break ?

Bullet Resistant Doors - Level 4 protection

Does anyone here have experience with building bullet resistant door (Level 4 protection : .30 Caliber Rifle (1 shot)) ? If yes, can you please share your design experience as how to you achieve the bullet protection, esp, plate thickness, in-fill core etc. Thanks StressStrain

Projectile Impact + Plate Stress Check

We have a projectile of mass m travelling at a velocity of v impacting in elastically to 1/2" plate. Assuming there is no local perforation of projectile, how do I determine that the global response of the plate is acceptable (i.e. some plate yielding is acceptable as long as it does not form a...

Maximum Allowable Angle to prevent cable from coming off from the sheeve pulley

Ideally the cable should be pulled in line with the sheeve, however the case is such that cable has to be pulled at an angle. My question is, how do I calculate the maximum allowable angle before the cable slips off from the sheeve ? Any help/pointers will be greatly appreciated...

    Road Transportation Loads

What is the maximum 'g' load (acceleration) that will be applied to a flexible component during road transportation in US. Is there a guide/MIL Spec/Rule of thumb I could use ? Thanks

Stress developed due to sudden flow of steam at 500 F into tube at ambient temperature

Does ASME discusses about the stress due to thermal shock of introducing fluid at high temperature to a pipe at ambient conditions ? If yes, can you refer the appropriate section. PS: I have posted similar question on pipeline forum. I apologize for double posting in advance.

    Thermal Shock Analysis

I am trying to figure thermal shock stresses imposed by sudden inflow of pressurized steam at 650F in the tube at ambient conditions. How do I go about calculating the thermal shock stresses generated ? Any pointer/references will be greatly appreciated. Thanks StressStrain

Lifting Pressure Vessel from horizontal position to vertical position ( on its feet) using one crane

Hi, One of our cranes has stopped working. So we have only functional crane in the shop. Any ideas on how lift-up the the pressure vessel from its current position (lying horiztonal on ground) to vertical position (on its feet). Lifting lugs are located on the top head. Pressure Vessel is 90"...

    Snow Ice Strength

I am trying to figure out torque required to actuate a damper against ice-built up of 6 in on the blades. Does anyone know where to find snow ice mechanical strength properties (tensile and shear strength) ? Thanks, StressStrain

Water Slug formation in condensor coil

Hi, If steam is travelling at a very high speed (800 ft/s, transient) through a condensor coil and assuming there is no pre-existing condensate in the line, can water slugs be formed as a result of condensation of steam as it travels though the condensor coil ? I am concerned about water...

Steam Hammer due to valve opening

Hi, I am trying to figure out the effect of fast opening of valve containing high pressure steam (1140 psi) on one side to a large condenser coil tubes. The tube is U shaped 1.5" OD, SST. How do I calculate the hammering loads. Does the fast opening of valve has any significant effect on the...

    Allowable Bolt Stress for A307

ASME gives allowable stress for A307 bolt as 7000 psi. However, AISC 9th edition, will allowable bolt stress of A307 as 20,000 psi. If the bolts I am trying to size are anchor bolts, do I still need to take allowable stress from ASME, or will AISC allowable stress be acceptable. Thanks

Minimum Size of Fillet Weld For a T-Joint

Table J2.4 of AISC ASD9th Edition provides minimum size of fillet welds. However they do not distinguish between lap joint or a t-joint. I would assume that Table is valid for only lapp joint fillet welds. Is there any such minimum weld size table for T-joint fillet welds. I will be welding a...

    Spool Thickness

I am trying to find out the thickness of the spool required to wind a 1-3/8" rope with 3000 lbs tension load on it. The diameter of the spool is 15". Here's my approach : 1. Calculate pressure applied by the rope on the cylindrical spool : p = 2*2*T/(D.spool x D.rope) = 1828psi...

    Failure prevention for projectile impact

Hi, We have to design a grate which can survive a hit from a plank (85lbs) moving at 133 mph. The grate is 240 inch long supported at it two ends. I am using the approach as described in Section 3.0 and 4.0 of the reference: http://www.osti.gov/scitech/servlets/purl/4242097 The elastic...

Acceptable Safety Factor to be applied to Eigen Buckling

Hello, I am designing a structure comprising of bunch of beams welded together. After applying the loads and performing linear eigen value buckling analysis I obtained a factor of FACT = 4. I understand that eigen value buckling overpredicts the buckling strength of a structure. In that...

    Rectangular Duct Design per SMACNA

Hi All, I have question about rectangular sheet metal duct welding. When joining the sheet metal to form a rectangular duct, is it required to use a continuous longitudinal seam weld at the welded corners (See Figure 16, SMACNA 1980), or is intermittent seam weld acceptable. Use of continuous...
