I am trying to model the phenomenon of the initial start of plasticity in A-36 plate. Specifically, I want to see strain increase at a constant pressure or force until the strain reaches the point that kinematic hardening starts to take over.
I am using Simulation Mechanical 2018 and Inventor...
I have a project where the initial metalurgical sample indicated a rather "soft" steel casting with a fairly low hardnes,83HRB.
I submitted a larger section for analysis and the larger section showed a much higher hardness away from the surface ,253HRB, and therefore a higher tensile strength...
I am welding a 3" thick x 70" OD tube x 48" long. This piece will be machined afer welding on the OD and ID. This is not a code pressure vessel part. Since I want to machine it after it is welded and I don't want it "walking around" during the machining I am debating whether to specify a...
I have a herringbone type gear rim that has multiple crack locations on only one side. The cracks are initiating at the pitchline of the gear tooth and severing the gear's rim. The gear was originally a fabrication. The rim is 4145 forging while the interior support plates are A-36. The root...

Would someone in this forum be kind enough to remind me as to what the formula is for figuring out the pre-roll cut length of a plate to be rolled into a cylinder of a specific diameter?
I am rolling a 2 1/4" thick plate to approximately 37.5" outside...
Group,
Is there a recognized standard for the design of large hydraulic cylinders such as are used in forging and injection molding presses?
The ASME Section 8 does not seem to be applicable to these cylinders. Especially the ones that are manufactured from ductile iron. There seems to be no...
I hope this isn't against the forum's policies, but I need a lead on a company that can respond quickly to my requirements for some parts that need to be manufactured utilizing wire edm. If it is permissable please post a link.
Thanks,

Is there a significant difference in the notch sensitivity between 4340 and 4140 when both are heat treated to an ultimate tensile strength of approximately 170ksi?
We usually specify 4340 for some of the fasteners we use in our repairs. Our supplier is having a hard time finding the 4340 but...
I am trying to model a retaining wall. The static hydrostatic pressure against the wall is easy to model and simulate. But!, does anyone have good rule of thumb for modeling the pressure developed due to say a 5mph current pushing against the retaining wall.
Thanks in adance.

I am looking for fatigue data on Class 60 grey iron.
Would anyone in this group have a recent source for this information.
Specifically an S-N curve for the notched and un-notched condition.
Thanks in advance.

The subject says it all. Can anyone in our group give me the AISI or ASTM equivalent of this British Standard Steel.
I am pretty sure that it was originally a plate steel that was rolled into a cylinder, fabricated into a quarter or half section of a large ring gear, normalized or at least...
