    A36 vs A572 machinability

Can anyone comment on the difference between the machinability of A572 versus A36. We are currently turning a part made of A36, the machine shop is finding that it is excessively gummy to the point where they have to replace inserts. A572 is similar in price and meets the yield strength...

    Stud Material

Sorry about the basic question, but we have ran into situation for a particular project were we need to turn a custom stud. The stud will be 5/16" in diameter and will need to be torqued to 18 ftlbs. The threads will be cut to M8x1.25x15mm on either side. The total lenght of the stud is...

    Plastic texture

How does everyone texture a plastic part in SW07? We have started to create quite a lot of plastic injection parts and I have no idea how to texture the particular surface other than change the visible appearance. Perhaps I answered my own question as a texture most likely would not be able to...

    Export X,Y,Z Co-ordinates

I have a 3D sketch that I used to make a sweep of tubing that I need bent. Problem is that the tube bender uses autocad and will need the 3D data to make the bends. Good thing is that none of the sketches are splines, so I'm hoping that it won't be to hard to reproduce. Problem is though how...

    "Fly Through" in Solidworks

Can you "Fly through" a part in solidworks? For example a pipe or anyother hollow object.

Problem opening files when clicking on them in windows explorer

The subject line maybe a little confusing, but I run into an error every time I try to load a file by double clicking on it say in Windows Explorer or an folder for that matter. If I open the file through solidworks I don't have a problem (File -> Open). As well if solidworks is already loaded...

View Solidworks drawing without Part file

Just curious if it is even possible to view a drawing without having the part file. I've noticed that I can preview the drawing without the part file, but once I load the file solidworks requests the part file.

    File Sizes in SW 2007

We recently upgraded to SW2007 from the 2005 version and I've notice that the file sizes are larger. For example I'll open a SW2005 part and save it in SW2007 and the file will be larger.

    ASTM A36 vs C1018

Can anyone tell me the difference between these to material? I've used matweb and they both seem very similar. We used A36 for our prototypes but since then the supply house only carries C1018.

Efficiency Mechanical Fuel Pump versus Electric

I am questioning the effieceny of a mechanical fuel pump versus an electric fuel pump. In theory it looks like the mechanical fuel pump is more efficient, but I just can't get my head around it. For example the mechanical fuel pump in question uses 1/5 HP at the selected load/RPM. At the same...

Floworks - External Flow Path for an Auto

I'm looking to study the air flow around a automobile and am a little puzzled on how to setup my boundaries. It seems I can only set an inlet/outlet velocity on a face rather than a plane or a view. Perhaps I can set it on a wall. Anyone having any tips? For example how would you model a...

    Extrude cut into multple faces??

I am running into somewhat of a problem, I need to cut a groove or channel into a body that has multiply faces. These faces are all different contours. The groove/channel can only be 0.050" deep from the initial face. It seems like the extrude cut feature from face would work but I cannot...

    Solidworks Routing

So I gave Solidworks routing a try and I seem to be running into a problem. When I create a new assembly, do I need to create a routing assembly or can I just create a normal assembly? So then I dragged the SW example connectors into my assembly. At this point a window should open up and...

    Wiring Assemblies

Do any of you use Solidworks for wiring assemblies? We cuurently use solidworks for all our drafting needs, except for wiring diagrams. I would imagine it is possible, but is it really time effective creating BOM, multi wire assemblies and connectors all for 2D?

    Floworks and Superflow test bench

Is there anyone with Floworks to analyze flow rates from different shaped pipes similar to how a Super Flow flowbench works. I've tried a number of different conditions, and boundaries with no luck. With the Super Flow, flow bench, the user would place the pipe on the intake of the test bench...

    Book Recommendations

I'm look for a good reference book on different material properties (yield, tensile, etc...) as well as typical applications. It should also have typical manufacturing methods and the pros and cons of each (cold forming, forging, etc...) Can anyone recommend a book?

    Draft Qs SW2005

We have a large hollow Aluminum feature that resembles a box. 28" Tall x 8" wide x 4" thick, the split line travels in a zig zag fashion down through the center. Unfortunately when adding draft to each side the edges are at different heights due to the 3° of draft over the length of the face...

    Generating core

We are working on a couple of intake manifolds, and I was wondering if there was an easy way to generate a core of one of the intake runners. I don't need to generate a pattern from the piece at this time I just want to inspect the outer counters of the intake runner. It is somewhat difficult...

    Draft on Text - Problems

Anyone got any tips on how to overcome outside draft on text. I have to put 3° of draft on text that is 72p large (Doesn't matter what font). The major problem is that the text sits about 1/3" away from the surface (extrude to next function), so than my extruded text is about 1/3" tall. Then...
