Why is delta-wye popular and not Y-Y?

I feel a delta-wye transformer just about complicates everything when it comes to high voltage substation design. Why aren't Y-grnd - Y-grnd the norm in the power system? Only at bulk power EHV do I see Y-Y. Why not in distribution, 138kV and down?

    UPS specification review

Hey guys we are putting in a battery energy storage device. Part of the system requires a backup power supply to black start the battery and tie it into the microgrid. The backup supply chosen is a UPS system. I am a substation engineer with no background in UPS system. I am given a bunch of...

    Transformer Phase Shift

Hey, In the attached picture, the 30degree phase shift transformer is shown. Now I would like to change this to a 330degree DYn11. How do I accomplish this using phase leads that are landing on the transformer bushing...

    Phasor rotation

Hello fellow engineers, I need help with something basic. If the phasors are rotating ABC counterclockwise. Is it possible to change this to ACB through a transformer? In other words, can the phasor rotation be changed at the transformer? Thanks

    Surge arrester MCOV

Hi, I need to specify a surge arrester in the neutral circuit of a 99MVA 138kv-34.5kv (14.4kv tertiary) auto transformer. The arrester will be located in the neutral circuit of the secondary winding (34.5kV) and is placed between the transformer neutral and a neutral grounding reactor (1ohm...

    Reactor vs Resistor

Hi I've been working on a short circuit study for a collector substation for a wind farm site. I want to specify a neutral impedance in the secondary winding of the GSU auto-transformer which is rated at 99MVA (base @65C), 138kv-34.5kV (14.4kV tertiary). Some here prefer putting in a reactor...

    Cable derating factors

FOr 5kV and 35kV conductors, are there any derating factors for the ampacity when the temperatures are other than 90C or 105C?

Single phase short circuit current calculation

I have a single phase 75kVA transformer with 1.7 %Z. See attached file for oneline. Can someone please show me how to calculate the short circuit current on the secondary side (240V) of the tranformer? Thank you for your time. Regards.

Calculating impedance for a three wdg xfmr

See attached pdf file for the nameplate information. I have a 3 winding transformer which has its each low side terminals connected to one 500kw inverter. I am used to seeing a pri-sec, pri-ter, and ter-sec impedance values for three winding transformers which I use to model it using PTW. How...

Do PV sources provide fault currents to a shortcircuit in the system?

I have very large PV (solar) generation connected to the utility substation through an 500kW inverter and a 300V/34kV transformer. Now, for setting up the relays for coordination, I need to have fault current values. My question is: Will PV generation provide fault current through inverters...

Why KWHr on meters instead of KVAHr?

Loads can be resistive, inductive or capacitive. However, when we look at the meters it only indicates energy cosumed in KWHr. Are we ignoring the reactive power in billing?
