    UK Grid problems 9th Aug

The BBC is reporting widespread blackouts in London and the SE and I can see that a lot of emergency generation has started up (suggesting low frequency cut in). It'll be interesting to hear what happened and how low the frequency got. This is at least the 4th low frequency event so far this...

Miniature circuit beaker vs fuse in VT secondary wiring

Is there any reason why I shouldn't use a 3 phase miniature circuit breaker rather than fuses on the secondary (110V) side of a VT? We've always used red spot fuses in the past but have been offered MCBs in the scheme I'm looking at. I can't think of a good reason not to use the MCBs at the...

    Sharing pricing information

The company I work for used to provide engineering services to other companies as well as our own sites. For various reasons we are retracting back to supporting our own sites only, so the sites we used to support are looking for new providers. A company I have dealings with are looking to...

Connecting tariff meter to control system

A different section of my organisation has asked me for advice on connecting the output of their tariff meters (watts, VArs and possibly current and volts) into the control systems. I know how we do it for our large sites (multiple circuits mainly over 100MVA) but I think that solution may be...

Standard CT & VT VA ratings?

I've been asked to give details for some replacement CTs and VTs for one of power stations. Are there standard VA ratings for CTs and VTs? The existing VTs are 200VA which is well in excess of what the actual burden will be (less than 5VA) so I don't want to tell them to order direct replacments.

Equipment for on site testing of electricity meters

It's looking like I need to start doing my own on-site testing of tariff meters. I've got a portable working standard at the moment but I can't programme test routines into it. I think I'll need equipment that can do automated testing I've looked at the MTE calport 300 and Omicron 256plus so...

Calculating load and no load losses of cables

How do you calculate the load and no load losses of a cable in kW please? I'm used to dealing with these for transformers but it doesn't seem to be as straight forward for cables. Thanks!
