    Spiral Stringer

any one know of any company in UK that can roll a spiral flat bar stringer Rad 7m (approx 45 degs) Cheers

    Bending Moment in bar

Am I right in thinking the BM in the bar shown is the resultant load R multiplied by the perpendicular distance to the opposite pin?. I suppose it's similar to a spreader bar but the few calcs I've seen for spreader bars haven't taken bending into account and I'm sure there must be some.

    thin walled tube

Is the calculation for tube thickness with a negative internal pressure the same as for posative internal pressure(pd/f). Can't remember this one and all texts only do formulaes for posative internal pressures, nothing showing an external pressure. Cheers Mick

Red book, green book, blue book

in UK, is (or was) there these colour books, if so what's the difference? Cheers Mick

    Flexible endplates

I've noticed that most literature for flexible endplates (in UK) shows a short (>0.6 x D) plate on the end of the beam, but in practice I see more full depth plates i.e. the plate is the same B x D dims as the beam and welded all round. Why is this, I would have thought that the smaller plate &...

    Purlins

I'm interested in the system of purlins/side rails and ancillary items like stays & braces. where can I get info from. Most manufacturers only give their sizes/loadings but don't say why or where you would use them. For example - why are the short braces from a purlin to a beam compression...

    Portal Buildings

Being nosey again. What stops the "long" lengths of roof beams from buckling in portal frames. they seem quite a small depth relative to other structures. Cheers Mick

    Mixer Shaft Loads

I want to design a simple flat 4 bladed paddle mixer. I know the torque & speed, paddle sizes etc but I need to know the side load on the shaft to size the shaft & bearings. I suppose in ideal conditions all the loads would cancel out but I know you boys put some factor in to calculate a "side...

    Automatic rotate

I occasionally use a very old version of SW and have to click the ROTATE icon each time. I,m sure it use to be "automatic" at one time. ie just hold the mouse button down without having to click the icon. How can I make it automatic? Cheers

    posts

BS 6399 states a certain amount of horizontal imposed loading on barriers/railings of so much per m. What if you have a sigle or double legged post in the centre of a "run". Is there a load requirement for that?

    Post subject to wind

If I have a round post sticking 6m up in the air, how much relative wind pressure will there be on it. I've seen a formulae for a flat surface of 1.38v2 (/m2) but I'm guessing there will be a coeficient to lower this slightly for a round section? Lamp posts seem like they must have quite a...
