Colleagues,
What are the techniques for sealing a small shaft like this one against water?
For a sense of scale, the outside diameter of the metal cylinder is around 50mm.
The purpose of this shaft is to turn a wiper that's attached directly to the shaft. (The photo doesn't show the wiper.)...
Colleagues,
I'm looking for standards for rugged wiring. My gut feeling is that there are MIL and NEMA standard that cover that. If anyone knows part numbers for these standards, could you please post them?
Any suggestion, insight or reference is really appreciated!

Colleagues,
I need advice about a linear sliding shaft with bushing. This is a type of thing I haven’t designed before. The sole purpose of these shafts is to prevent rotation of one flat part against another. Both parts are flat plates, parallel to each-other. Plates are made of delrin...
Colleagues,
I'm setting up a fluorescence experiment with quinine as fluorescent dye. Quinine is a common fluorescence standard, that's why I chose it. The caveat with quinine, though, is that its excitation band is in near UV; peak is between 320nm and 370nm. Due to size constraints, I'd like...
Folks,
Could anyone recommend some practical books on optomechanical design? I’m mostly a circuit and software designer. I have done a moderate amount of general mechanical design too. For my current project, I need to make a relatively small optical measurement system, and I have a...
