Dear Engineers
I have been asked by a local builder to design a post to support his house.
The builder had built a single-storey extension on the rear of the house and then taken all the walls out from inside the ground-floor except for a couple of partitions. To support the upper-floor, the...
Dear Engineers
I am wanting to check the design of a reinforced concrete-slab that has glass-block voids and a band of insulation (please see attached). The slab is constructed in two parts; with the glass-blocks laid out, the bottom rib, which contains the reinforcement, is poured first and...
Hello
I am wanting to assess the strength of polystyrene and have obtained a data-sheet for the material we are going to use Attached).
I am not sure why there are two compressive strengths (@1% and @10%). I suspect it may be due to the compression of the material.
Can anyone educate me on...
Hello
I am wanting to sandwich a dense-polystyrene-board between two skins of concrete and I am seeking an adhesive that will bond the polystyrene to the concrete. The adhesive will be subjected to some horizontal-strain but not excessively.
Any pointers would be appreciated.

Dear all
I have drawn a parametric-block that I want a dynamic-array to follow. (attached)
The array has a grip that has to manually pulled. I want this grip to go as I want to manipulate the block from a an external source.
Any tips please.

Hello
I have downloaded frame3dd and openGL and I want to use it. Any clues please. The technical help is not much good but I 'kind of' understand the templates and examples that came with the download. I just need someone to steer me in the right direction.
All tips and examples greatly...
Hello
I am wanting to calculate the deflection in a manhole-cover I am drawing (attached).
The concrete is effectively a reinforced-slab with the reinforcement welded to the steel-frame. The frame is 5mm thick (or more depending on my calculations).
How should I calculate the deflection...
Hello
I am trying to find a formula that I could use in a spreadsheet for the bending-moments of a simply-supported two-way slab under a concentrated-load (similar to equations 10 and 12 of BS8110). The load is 300-mm square.
Any references or guidance would be appreciated.

Hello
I am wanting to assess a concentrated load on a two-way spanning slab (1.5m x 3.0m) supported on four-sides. The load (75kN on a 300x300mm pad) will be 150-mm away from any bearing.
To assess the effective-width of the load-spread beneath the concentrated-load; BS8110 refers me to clause...
Hello
I have designed a number of small thin-slabs to BS8110. The slabs are simply-supported on all four sides, are 100-mm thick, 1000-mm wide and range from 1000-mm long to 5500-mm long. There is no provision for torsion-steel and there is no 'uplift' restraint at the edges. The slabs are...
Hello
I am in the process of 'converting' to the eurocodes, notably eurocode 5: Timber; and I am having trouble understanding the principles of deflection of a beam. I attended a seminar and have two books explaining the principles and each source describes the method differently with...
Hello
I have been given a project to design a steel portal-frame building and I need a structural analysis program that will help me with my calculations. The programs I am used to cost 1000's of £/$ and out of my league. I could afford £500-£600 but the program must be able to "do the job"...
Dear all
I have been using the parametric abilities of the AutoCAD program. If I build a model using, say, 12 components, is it possible to list each of the components and attach attributes such as cost, materials, size and supplier to the components and include them in the list.

I am creating a composite timber structure using Revit Structure and I want to share the thickness of a sheet of ply with three independant families. I am able to include the shared parameter with each family but I have to set the value in each model.
Is there a way of setting the thickness of...
Dear all
I have been reading up on deflection, particularly the position of the maximum, and it stated in the Steel Designers Manual (1980-ish edition) that the max deflection occurs where the bending-moment is maximum. Is this so?

I am using a Structural Insulated Panel as a ceiling and am wanting to check my design. I am going to treat the SIP as a stress-panel and transform the PUR core to OSB for my design checks but I am having trouble tracking down the parameters that I need for my calculation.
I am trying to find...
Hello.
I am in the need of a strong structural material such as foamglas but 15mm thick to be thermal-break. Foamglas is only available 40mm thick. It is the thermal-insulation value and strong in compression qualities of the material I am requiring. The material is to be sandwiched and bonded...

I have calculated the transformed area for a composite slab (attached) and would very much appreciate your comments on my analysis, please?
