Here are photos of a catastrophic bearing failure. Bearings broke down with multiple cracks like this are rare.
These are 2008 photos, and I do not recall what the root cause of this failure turned out to be.
The dirty brown appearance on the outside race tends to indicate the motor end...
Scrolling through old electric motor repair photographs while self isolating during a pandemic...
Here's a sequence of pictures captured back in November, 2007.
A gentleman in a hurry to leave with an un-repaired D.C. motor came back to the shop a few minutes later asking for additional...
Does Elihu Thomson's Demonstration Transformer still exist?
As much as I dread soliciting "the street" for assistance, I'm not having much luck in finding an answer.
My father was a product illustrator, draftsman, and later an executive at Thomson Electric Welder Company.
During the late...
Having worked on electric motors for a little while. An observation is continually noted.
It's all about how (they) are controlled. The motor itself has been made to perfection.
If the motor fails, it's not the motor's poor design, it's the way it was controlled, or it's application.

Advances in material attributes, and construction features of Direct Current Motors have
evolved over many decades. The slow... steady decline of D.C. motor applications has also
marked a trend toward fewer articles written about these types of machines.
The PDF file attachment is...
Having long been a fan of the Advance Patent Search feature via Google to research old patent numbers found on equipment I’ve worked on
over the years and the site providing a wealth of insight for me in understanding why an item was constructed the way it was designed,
(Reliance Electric and...
Photos attached show what’s left of an Internal Cooling Fan on a 1500 HP gas compressor motor recently placed in service.
The relatively new Baldor/Reliance brand motor may have less than 500 hours on it.
Oil appeared very clean, and the sleeve bearings were not wiped out.
Internal fins...
An old topic among those who have forgotten half or all of what they've learned
along the way... and I'll plead guilty for not fully knowing much about this topic before posting
the following question. My modest search has proved no useful info... so I've landed back here.
Electrical Apparatus...
As everyone here enjoys solving "electrical problems"... Can I rear the ugly old question of... "What's Next"?
What's going on in this ever changing industry that we... as (Electrical People) need to be ready for.
What are you working on? What's next?
Any "heads up"?
John
The method, arrangement, practice, protocol, requirement, etc. related to physically connecting
motor leads to a power supply are numerous.
Obviously, an 18,000 HP motor is not going to be electrically connected using wire nuts.
And a 1/20 HP bathroom fan motor is not going to require soldered...
In testing low voltage D.C. Electric Motors rated at numerous high current ratings under "no load" conditions,
I've opted to build a test station using the old fashioned high current battery
capacity of lead acid storage batteries for their "pure" Direct Current attributes.
I realize I could...
Can anyone here point me toward a Data Sheet, or info related to the operating characteristics
of an old Syntron S4005 Diode? It's in a DO-8 Package with a date code that appears to be from the 29th week of 1964.
Any help... will be a big help.
Photo attached for reference:
Thanks in advance...
What's the best method, or new trend for supplying Direct Current to D.C. Motors on the test floor today?
500 Volt Armatures and up... for example.
Any new low voltage arrangement ideas for testing forklift truck motors etc. would be helpful as well.
John
Many Vertical Motors are oil lubricated. A "Stand Pipe" obstructs common measuring tools the necessary access to check dimensions of the oil lubricated bearing housings/end brackets during the repair process. The "pipe" is usually removed, sometimes at a lengthy time element to obtain the...
The opening scenes in this CBS Sunday morning program caught my eye right away. No one is wearing Safety Glasses.

Anyone here no the reason? Do tell!

While the subject of this thread relates to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, it could easily be titled the Teamsters,
or any of the other longstanding labor related unions as well.
Most electric motor repair shops in the United States are not represented by a labor union...
A couple of years ago, EASA published a "Tech Note" regarding the
preferred method(s) of installing, and test operating a motor with
a roller bearing installed in [it] etc. I don't have access to
this data right now. Is there a willing participant among the crowd
here that can authenticate what...
What industry today is using the most electric motors?
One could answer, "society", in a way.
For everyone has a blower motor on their furnace/air conditioning unit and so on.
From an Industry Perspective... where are all the "dollars" hovering?
What industry in 2011 is using the most...
It's been ages since I've signed on to this site. Had to have my password re-sent.
I started working on electric motors in small (Mom-N-Pop) shops.
My career advanced to a larger metropolitan area where I was exposed to very specialized
motors built for specific purposes (both A.C. and D.C.)...
