I've come across existing construction with 12" masonry "stretcher" blocks...see the appended photo. Trying to perform calculations, but haven't been able to find typical section properties for these type of walls.
I could conservatively use section properties for typical ASTM C90 12" CMU...
Doing some reinforcement and renovations to an existing structure with structural steel exposed to the elements.
Currently, I've specified that the contractor "remove rust and loose mill scale. Clean steel in accordance with SSPC SP-3."
Any suggestions for the primer/paint I should specify...
I have a project involving a one story, steel framed building with exterior 8" block walls (single wythe, no veneer). Open web roof joists frame to interior columns and beams, and bear on the exterior block walls on the northern and southern face of the building (joists run from north to...
For determining anchor loads, is the 2xLR blast load applied only to the glazing area or is it also applied to the frame area?
The reason I’m asking is that if the frames are wide, that additional area will increase loads, whereas blast load to glazing only will result in lower anchor loads.
Working on a project using drilled concrete piles, with timber lagging initially proposed between the concrete piles to retain fill. However, I've been informed that there is some belief timber lagging is no longer allowed in the California Building Code.
Does anyone know if this is true...
I'm attempting to locate and purchase a helpful reference for lateral design...our firm primarily focuses on 1-2 story steel framed buildings typically using masonry shear walls (and braced frames/moment frames as required).
Any suggested manuals/literature would be appreciated. Thanks.
Working on a project using Insulated Concrete Forms for the exterior wall system. Steel framing will be used at the building interior.
We have conditions where horizontal beams are framed to (as well as bearing) the ICF walls and are considered moment frames.
I'm thinking a moment connection...
I have a contractor looking to use 2" dia. schedule 40 pipe for a short post in a crawlspace. I was not able to find any tables online regarding allowable loads for said pipe. Any ideas where to look? Thank you.
Does anyone have any advice how to model a bent beam (gable roof) in RAM? I've got a one story, conventionally framed building. Unfortunately, I've had to place "temporary" columns at the building ridge line in order to complete the framing model.
Naturally, these columns are not to appear in...
We're replacing a mechanical unit in a second story mechanical room at a school built in the late 1950s.
According to the existing drawings, the floor construction is "2.5 inch concrete slab on Steeltex Floor Lath". The floor framing below this slab is SJ146 joists spaced not to exceed 2.5...
We're replacing equipment in an existing boiler room, and I noticed from the existing drawings that the roof framing is existing timber 2x14 members at 12" O.C. The mechanical engineer plans to support new piping in the room from the timber framing.
Given the new loading is within the...
