I am designing an exhaust stack for a diesel engine/generator. The stack is 55' tall, and has exhaust temperatures around 650 degrees. I am doing the structural design. The SMACNA GSSC Design Guide limits the design to 300 degrees. Is 650 degrees a problem? How do I account for the...
I am designing an exhaust stack for a diesel engine/generator. The stack is 55' tall, and has exhaust temperatures around 650 degrees. I am doing the structural design, but I thought I should research the temperature implications. The SMACNA GSSC Design Guide limits the design to 300 degrees...
I'm trying to analyze some sensitive equipment to be supported on the roof of an old building. There is nearby mechanical equipment that we will support on vibration isolators.
How do I know how much vibration will still be imparted into the building from the mechanical equipment?
How do I...
Anyone versed in blast design for military projects? I am looking for guidance in checking an OWSJ. The joist manufacturers don't give you top and bottom chord sizes, but I need them to check the joist for inelastic rotations and dynamic load carrying capacities.
Thanks for any help
I have a two story shear wall in seismic category D per the 2006 IBC. It has 665 plf of shear. Per Table 2306.4.1, I can use the 3/8" struct-1 sheathing with 15/32" values per footnote d. Footnote i is also referenced and states that 3x sills are required for shears over 350 plf, and refers...
I have a building design I'm working on, I'm asking the geotechnical engineer for soil design parameters and he is giving me the same end bearing numbers as he is for shallow footings:
Structural Loads
Axial Load (D+L+EQ)=100 kips
Moments (D+L+EQ)=25 ft kips
Shear (D+L+EQ)=15 kips
Preliminary...
Has anyone ever modeled a tapered beam/col frame for a metal bldg? The nonprismatic beam definition starts and ends with a wide flange section, not sure if this accurate, aren't they welded plate girders?
Anyone know of a software that easily models a preengineered metal building frame? I have to analyze an existing frame for additional loads and I can't find a tapered girder or column option in ETABS or Enercalc.
Thanks in advance
I have a contractor that has substituted A193 Gr B7 for the specified A325. Both were galvanized. Any problems that anyone might see with that?
Thanks as always!
I have anchors for a large zipline that were specified to be galvanized. The contractor didn't do it, and now I'm at a loss as to how to protect things against corrosion without disassembling everything. See picture attached.
Any ideas, the AISC code states that if it's exposed, it must be...
Hello all,
I am tasked with evaluating a laundromat for changing over to front loading washing machines. The existing top loading machines are supported on a raised floor (wood joists on wood beams on wood posts). The new front loading machines have an inherent problem with vibration since...
Has anyone used or heard of or seen a digital level for use in determining height/elevation differences in a building similar to the standard water or hydrostatic levels? I've found digital manometers, but not sure how this will work as these measure pressure drops in a closed system?
Thanks
Is corrosion protection required per code for exposed steel. I have some cable anchors for a large zipline that are not galvanized, but should be. Is this a code requirement, or can they be painted, or can we assume that rust will take some of the steel section over the life of the structure...
A fabricator was told to weld a 6" lateral pipe to a 10" main pipe with a fillet weld. The line is chilled water at 20 psi. It was tested to 150 psi, and held.
ASME B31.1, pg 75, fig 127.4.8, dwg A (I don't have this if someone could provide it) apparently discusses a CJP weld, not a fillet...
What is the minimum clearance between a structural steel floor beam and the crawl space soil? I can't find anything in the California Building Code (CBC) 2007, based on the IBC 2006 or the ASCE 7-05. I can find weep screed clearance, and wood clearance, but not that required for exposed steel...
I'm designing a two story cmu building with masonry shearwalls on 3 sides and a steel MF on the front of the building. The diaphragms are flexible and framed with open web joists with LVL top and bot chords. It's a box.
Any thoughts on detailing at the corner where the CMU meets the steel MF...
