Old German drawing shows the material as:
Werkstoff Mn Si Stg - not sure about the "stg" it is hand written and not exactly clear.
Can anybody offer any more details on what it is?
Does anybody know the formulation of Federal-Mogul "Vellumoid" gasket material and if the compostition has changed significantly in the past 40 years or so?
Comments appreciated on the following:-
I am working on some failures which might be explained by several mechanisms one of which includes small dimensional changes during service.
Failures involve rotating equipment which has been in service for a number of years potentially seeing many...
I have some firmly held views on the most important variables affecting fatigue and corrosion-fatigue performance but would appreciate any comments others may have on the following:
How significant is toughness on the fatigue, corrosion-fatigue perfomance of a material?
I realise that there are differences which make a one to one comparison of the accuracy requirements of these two standards difficult but can anybody recommend a basic publised comparison table?
Posted this in the tribology area but since it is suggested as a corrosion issue I will try here as well.
I have heard reports that there can be serious corrosion problems in copper based alloy gears in the presence of EP packages containing sulfur and phosphorus compounds. Can anybody provide...
I have heard reports that there can be serious corrosion problems in copper based alloy gears in the presence of EP packages containing sulfur and phosphorus compounds. Can anybody provide any references to these issues?
I need a large block 9-inch thick welded to an A36 assembly by fillet welding. Typically heavy section A 36 plate is also used for this piece but I cannot get the material I need within the delivery schedule, I can however get AISI 1020 meeting A36 mechanical properties.
Are there any downsides...
Comments would be appreciated on the likely causes for a recent outbreak of transverse weld metal cracking observed on fabrications.
Welding is carried out within a dedicated fabrication shop and is all fillet welds on A36 base material using E71T-1 cored wire and 100% Carbon Dioxide shielding...
I have some hexagonal bar - appear to be cold drawn - hardness is around 400 BHN
Main elements determined on spectrometer
C 0.25%
Mn 1.65%
S 0.17%
no other elements at significant levels.
What is it?
Does anybody have any references to any research work or investigations on the causes and effects of the black tin-oxide deposits frequently found on small areas of the surface of babbitted bearings?
Does anybody have any references to fracture toughness data for Ductile (Nodular) cast irons?
The only one I have been able to find so far is:
Bradley and Srinivasan, International Materials Review
Vol 35, No 3, 1990
This was posted on the ASM International Web Page www.asm-intl.org under the general discussion topics of the Ask ASM section - like the author I am intrigued by the statement about being able to "smell" fatigue
Gunpowder-like Smell [Reply]
Yesterday (7/25/04), in my local newspaper there was...
