    Best Pipeline Book

I am a civil engineer and have never been exposed to much in depth water pipeline design. What would be the best book or method to become an expert in this field. I am looking to know all about piping types, fittings, hydraulic design, restraint types and design, backflow and PRV valve design...

    Acidity of Rock Backfill

I was recently asked what provisions are being made for the acidity in rock backfill and it through me for a loop. Anyone have any experience with this? We are designing a 24" steel gas pipeline that will have corrosion protection. In the roadways it will have rock backfill. I think this is a...

    Parking Lot Planter Strip Sizing

Is there any criteria for sizing planter strips at the ends of parking isles? We are designing a parking lot and have limited room and want to minimize them as much as possible.

Catch Basins in Gravel Parking Lots

Does anyone have any experience using catch basins in a gravel parking lot? I have always tried to avoid them due to obvious reason. I think I have seen them used before with a concrete apron around them to avoid dirt and gravel getting in them.

    Trenching

We need to take a 24" pipe under a good size electrical duct bank sitting with a bottom of 5' deep. Is there normally issues with supporting the duct bank during trenching activities?

    Concrete Pipe Trenching

We are designing a concrete pipe trench on an industrial site that will hold 2 24" Gas lines with 2 smaller gas lines running above them. 4 pipes total in concrete trench. One 24" gas line will be laid in the trench initially will the others to be installed with other phases. What would be the...

    Concrete Vaults

We are designing a 20' and 8' stormwater detention vault. Is it customary to allow the contractor to determine if its cast-in-place or not.

    BACKFLOW PREVENTION

I am pulling a 12" fire line off a 18" domestic line with a Double Check Valve (backflow valve) installation on the fire line. Do you need a seperate gate valve from the DCV for line shut down? What goes into design something like this? Also, does anyone know a good learning resource for Water...

    Rip Rap on Stream Bed

For a personal project I am looking to rip rap a stream bed in my yard to prevent future erosion. I can calculate max flows in the stream (4' wide btm/2' deep/2:1 side slopes) but does anyone have recommendations on how to use that max flow to size the rip rap needed? Anyone have any links on...

    Pipe Demolition

We are rerouting a storm line. In doing so we are removing a pipe flowing north out of a manhole and installing a pipe flowing east out of a manhole. How would a contractor demo the pipe out to the north? Would it just be a simple removal of the pipe and grouting of the pipe opening in the...

    Conveyance Channel down steep slope

I have a proposed trapezoidal stormwater conveyance channel with a capacity of approx 80cfs. I need to get the water down an existing 60'(vertical) 2:1 slope to a river bed from the channel. Does anyone have any ideas on the best way to do this? Since this is in a desolate area and...

    Pipe Connection to Manhole

We have a proposed situation where we have a 18" perforated pipe at a depth of 12' and then a 36" storm drain directly above it at a depth of 5'. Due to proposed site conditions there is not a way to not have the pipes in this orientation. Does anyone have ideas of how to connect these to a...

    Foundation Drains

I have a situation we have a long (8500') concrete foundation (20' wide) for a fish passage which includes 18" foundation drains on each side of it. The foundation is sloped at 8%. We want to divert water out of the foundation drain to a storm main running parallel to the fish passage at 2500'...

    Springs

We have a development that will be designed / constructed on the downhill side of two springs about 250' apart. We will need to create a collection device to pick up runoff from the springs. Does anyone have any ideas how to estimate flows from springs? I was able to hunt down some aerials...

    Stormwater Piped Down Steep Slopes

I have a 48" Stormline flowing 75% full at 5% that approaches the top of a 30' 1:1 slope. What is the best way to pipe down something like this taking velocities and energy dissipation into account. The current solution is to make the 84" manhole at the top of slope 25' deep with a 48" outside...

    Water Line Sizing

Hello, We have a proposed contractor staging area in which we need a water supply for. Near the site is a 3" water service line to a single building (5000sf). What would be the requirements to tell if this line would be able to service our site (25000sf in building). Thanks

    Fire Line Size

Hello, We have a large size temporary contractor staging area for an industrial site in which we have an above ground 8" line proposed. Near the site is a 6" Fire Line that runs away from the site for about 500' to a 12" Fire Line. Would it be feasible to connect our 8" proposed line to this...
