I have a situation where I have to design steel tapered hollow columns which have both axial and bending loads. Does anyone know where I can find some good information on tapered members and their design? Also, can tapered members be entered into Risa? Thanks
I have a typical poured concrete foundation basement wall that rests on a concrete footing. I always provide dowels into the footing that match the vertical bars in the wall. Since the dowels are not it tension or compression, what is the required lap length?
I'm designing a fall arrest system which utilizes wood fasteners. Can a load duration factor equal to 2.0 be used? Would this be considered an impact load? Thanks
I'm sure this has been asked a million times. Can't seem to find it on the searce. Does anyone have a simple design guide for muliple tier cantilevered retaining walls? Thanks
Table 2.2.3.2 in the ACI 530 gives values for flexural tension. Would normal to bed joint mean my masonry wall would be spanning vertically? I get this confused everytime I look at it. Thanks
I know lateral bracing is ineffective if it is placed near the center of the beam. I know the ideal place is to brace the compression flange. I have a situation where it would be ideal someplace in between. What works? What doesn't? Thanks
In the past I have used the Yura design methodology for caluclating the critical lateral-torsional buckling moment for double curvature beams (i.e. beams with cantilevers). Of course this was consistent with the LRFD specification. Does this method still hold true with the 13th edition AISC...
I have an expansion joint in my metal deck that runs parallel with the bar joist. I need to transfer a shear load across this joint. Does anyone have suggestions on how this is done? Diagonal brace across joint? What happens at my chord members at this joint? Thank you
I have a 2 story braced frame. The diagonal braces are broken at the 1st story and designed using those lenghts respectively. The beam at the first story is not braced by the floor diaphragm. Am I right to say that the beam at the 1st story has to be designed as a lateral brace or provide...
I know buoyancy is crucial item to the design of an underground tank. I've been asked to design a tank that is 20'x40'x10' deep. I've been informed by the civil engineer that the "water table is well below the tank". Is that all the information I may need? Is that information enough? Is...
