As the topic suggests my question is in regards to eccentric loads on beams. Say I have a 12" cmu sitting on a W30. Technically if the lintel is 2" off of center line, I would consider e=2" on my beam but from a practical point of view, wouldn't the load coming down into the cmu re-align to some...
I don't like the idea of a free standing column, even if its designed with the K=2.0. I have always braced columns in both direction, and a couple of times even though the columns were for large lintels and hence they needed not to go up to the roof, but I made clear in the column sched. that...
I am working on renovations to an existing gym. The renovations are minor including replacement of a slab on grade, a couple of 8’x12’ floor infill and then placement of a new RTU on the existing roof with a couple of openings in the existing roof as well.
My interpretation of section 1704...
I am checking an existing composite floor structure for some new loads. Structure was built in 1981. The section thru the floor suggests: t=2", t1=6".......which I am taking to mean that the deck is a 4" deep deck. The sketch shows t&b rebar in each flute, so I am trying to get a general idea of...
2 sketches attached.
I am dealing with a new RTU (aprox. 4000#) over an existing concrete T-joist roof. Ts are 20” deep, 30” oc. Each panel is 5’ long with 2 Ts thus. The existing drawings show the moments for which the T manufacturer had to design for but I can’t figure out two things:
1) The...
In a recent meeting some folks were having a debate about how to approach a SOG where the floor is going to be covered with Mundo. Obviously they are concerned about the slab drying out before they covering can be placed. Some things I picked up in the meeting which I did not know before:
1)...
What are the current rates of unemployment in our industry. I read numbers upto 27%, which seem too high. Is our U.E %age identical to the genearl U.E in the country?
When I was finishing grade school back a few years back one of my professors, with decades of background of DOT work, mentioned...
I am reviewing shops for a project designed by another engineer. The floor framing is precast planks sitting on support inside the web of the W30 bms (I hate always hated this detail). The precaster is asking if he can cut off about 4'-6" portion of half the top flange to slip in his planks and...
I am looking at a project where Z girts, spanning 25', spaced 5' apart were used on a storage building. They want to some new RTUs on the existing structure.
While doing other field measurements I also did a quick check of the Z girt (3"x8"x3") but I am not sure if I got the thickness right. I...
I seem to be getting more and more involved in the renovation work that our firm is getting. Can anyone suggest some good books, artilces, websites to read up on basics of inspection and renovation specially concrete and masonry.
Thanks,

I am looking at a project from another engineer where the roof deck was designed as 5/8" plywood. The client wants to go to 3/4" OSB. My wood books are in a disarray, can anyone post a link to allowable capacities of 3/4" OSB.
Thanks,
Kaiser
What is the minimum soil cover that you need to be on top of an exterior footing. The frost depth is 3'-6" and the footing is 4' deep. I always thought that the footing had to be at least 12" below grade. I just want to be avoid extra excavation costs.
There is no uplift on the footing so I...
Is there a summary guide for the minimum time after which the forms have to remain in place? The contractor asked me the other day if he could remove the forms for grade beam after 24 hrs, the specs say 7 days which seems a bit excessive. Personally I think 3 days should be OK.
Job Location...
From your expereince, what is the most comman and ecnomical grid layout using steel (beam, columns, joists). I was thinking 24'x24' or 30'x25'.
I know its a silly question, but would still want expereinced folks to share their thoughts.
Thanks,
Kaiser
The Arch wants to place 10'tall 4" & 6" cmu walls (ungrouted, interior) over an existing 4" slab. I am apprehensive even though the slab pics seem to indicate a decent condition of the slab. Am I being too conservative?
