Poor durability of black oxide on 17-4PH stainless

I have some parts made from 17-4PH cond H1025 stainless steel that require a black surface finish for cosmetic purposes only. I have been using MIL-DTL-13924 class 4 black oxide, but this black oxide coating is very easy to damage. I appreciate that black oxide coating is not intended to provide...

Cost of DLMS part in titanium

I just got quotes for having a part made in 6Al-4V titanium using DLMS. I was a bit shocked when I saw the two vendor's quotes, both of which were right around $4K for a single part. The part volume is around 6 cu.in. (~1lb), the part dimensions are around 3.5"x2"x2.5", the shape of the part is...

Black Oxide Coating of Nitronic 60

I am considering using moderately strain hardened (160ksi uts) Nitronic 60 bar for a shaft design. The shaft body will be loaded in shear and may experience a very small amount of sliding at the contact with the mating bore surface. The mating part is 17-4PH H1150 cres. I need a cosmetic black...

    Dyno Service in My Area

I have a piston engine I designed and built from scratch. I would like to run it on a dyno and get some baseline performance data (torque, HP, BSFC, maybe some emissions data?) and do a few hours of durability testing. The engine will (hopefully) make about 200HP max and run between 1000 and...

    Production cost of auto engines?

Does anyone have a valid figures for production costs of automotive engines? I've seen figures for a typical DOHC in-line 4 cylinder of about $700 to $800 (US$). I'm curious if this number is correct- it seems a little bit low. And how much more would a V6 or V8 engine be? Thanks in advance. Terry

    Varying main rotor speed

Please forgive my ignorance on the subject of helicopter aerodynamics, but I have a question: Is there any value in being able to vary the main rotor speed in relation to the engine speed? I have a design for a CVT that can handle high levels of torque. The CVT is (fairly) light weight, has a...
