-20degF Vessel for PED

I am redesigning a small vessel for use in Europe at -20F (-29C). Currently it is made of SA53B,E shell, SA414G heads, SA36 machined nozzles. My understanding is that these materials cannot be rated -29C in Europe without impact testing. But I understand that I can achieve -29C if I switch to...

90/10 CuNi for Sect 8, Div 1 Heat Exchanger

Hello All, We are designing a heat exchanger for marine service. The customer has asked that the tubeside meet ASME Code Sec8 Div1 and be made of 90/10 CuNi. I'm making the Domes and Flanges out of SB171-C706. I don't see any CuNi in Sect 2 Part D for B16.5 flanges and B16.11 fittings. So I'm...

    UHX Applicability

UHX-10(a) says that for the rules of Part UHX to apply, a tubesheet must be "uniformly perforated over a nominally circular area". I conclude, then, that if a tubesheet is not "uniformly perforated over a nominally circular area", the Tube Requirements of UHX-4(e) are not mandatory. In that...

    TEMA Training

Does anyone know of an organization that offers training in the TEMA Standard? I did not see any training offered on the TEMA website. Thanks.

    UG-41 Strength of Reinforcement

UG-41(b) says I can use the minimum of W, W11, W22, and W33 in evaluating nozzle weld strengths. In the case of Fig. UG-41.1(b), if if A1>A then W<0. Does this mean ANY nozzle attachment weld strength is acceptable, as long as the weld meets UW-16 requirements?

    Export Pressure Vessel to Korea

Can anyone direct me to a source of information on how to get pressure vessels approved for export to South Korea? I didn't find anything in a search of Eng-Tips. I assume meeting ASME Sect VIII Div 1 is a good first step. Perhaps someone can offer additional guidance. Thanks. Rick

    B75/B359 C12200 Finned Tube

A manufacturer says his finned tube is "produced in alloy C12200 to meet mechanical, chemical, and testing requirements of ASTM B75/B359". If I want to do Sect VIII Div 1 UG-28 calculations for this tube, do I use the External Pressure Chart NFC-1 or NFC-7 in Sect II Part D? (I am referring to...

    Shell Material for Chiller

I am designing a shell & tube chiller: refrigerant in the tubes, brine in the shell. The unit is to be rated as 375 psi tubeside according to Sec VIII, Div 1, and 150 psi shellside non-code. It is my understanding that, although the shell is declared "non-code", it still must be made from...

    304/304L Stainless Steel

Can anyone tell me what it means for a steel to be "dual rated" as "SA312-304/304L" or "SA240-304/304L"? Also, if this steel is used in ASME Sec. VIII Div 1 calculations, which properties should be used? 304? 304L? Average? Thanks! Rick

    UG-27 & 28 Calcs for Finned Tube

I have a finned tube made of SB-359 C12200 H55. The ends without fins are .745" OD x .047" nom wall. The unfinned ends are completely contained within the tubesheet. The finned portion is 0.611" ID x .028"nom/0.025"min wall, with .037" fins projecting according to the mfgr drawing. The fins are...

    High Pressure Pneumatic Test Chamber

Hello All, My company is very interested in building a test chamber to check pressure vessels (24” dia x 10ft long) pneumatically up to 770 psi for structural integrity. After that, we would follow up the structural test with a leak test capable of detecting 10E-9 to 10E-11 cc/min. The long...

    SA53B ERW for Shell

Hello All, I'm new to the ASME Sec. VIII, Div. 1, and wish to clarify my understanding. I tried searching the threads for this, but perhaps my question is too elementary. Assume a vessel constructed of SA53B ERW pipe (K03005) and semi-elliptical heads, type 2 welds, no radiography. For shell...
