Dear Experts,
Is there a rule of thumb regarding the distance of the cut boundary relative to the point of interest. I find I have to try different distances /re analyse to verify that the cut boundaries of the submodel are far enough away from the concentration
Thanks
Eddie
Dear Experts,
We have experimentally tested fatigue data of cast steel notched and unnotched dumbell specimens to which there is a stress life curve.
Is this stress life curve suitable for stress above yield of the material as we have determined from our FEA?
I realise strain life curve would...
Dear All,
As part of my work to get some rotational inertias, does anyone know what the typical density of run flats such as the VFI by Hutchinson for off road vehicles?
I believe it is a composite of rubber and carbon fibre, i tried search for density of it but no luck
Thanks

Dear All,
Is it possible to simulate the effects of shot peening using FEA methods.
Would applied uniform displacement to the surface be a suitable method?
Or is custom non linear material data like kinematic strain hardening required?
Thanks
I currently have an FEA of a solid pin with a hole drilled perpendicular to shaft axis of rotation and located centrally long shaft length.
The shaft is subject to pure bending. Mesh refinement was performed on the hole feature until convergence. As expected stress concentrations occur on the...
Dear Experts,
Does any know of a source to get info regarding the advantages/disadvantages regarding the ride/handling, weight transfer comparison of 6*6 against 8*8 etc?
Thanks

Dear Experts,
Are there any standards for the testing of heavy vehicles subjected to sine wave road profiles? ISO or SAE?
I currently have standards for open loop test methods and steady state circular tests methods
Any information appreciated.
Thanks
Hi Folks,
In the past (Solidworks 2009), there was a very useful feature where one could select a part or sub assembly in the graphics area and it would automatically highlight that selection in the PDM works tree.
This is not working correctly anymore in Solidowrks 2010 SP4. IT might...
Dear Experts,
I am using LMS Virtual.Lab to simulate straight line motion of an 8*8 vehicle. However, this model is drifting significantly and I cannot find the culprit.
I have checked the following
• steering system (wheel yaw ~ 0.15 etc)
• weight distribution (rear bogie heavier loaded...
Dear Experts,
I have just come across products online that capture dynamic wheel forces for cars and heavy vehicles by attaching the device to wheels etc.
Is data from such a device commonly used by OEM's to help design suspension and hub components due to forces acting on the wheel?
Or what...
Dear Experts,
As part of our tapered wheel bearing approval, I wish to determine a target figure for braking in km which is based on average deceleration, velocity and the number of km travelled per brake application.
Can anyone direct me to sources or standards used for guidelines on braking...
Dear Folks,
Is it possible to do a hand calc to determine the bending moment of a pin which is inside a collar? (See Schematic attached)
The collar is in the form of a bushing that surrounds the pin.
I ultimately want to calculate the pin stress due to bending and shear etc.
I can calculate...
Dear Experts,
I have a general query regarding approaches to take when there is a lack of sufficient data for fatigue analysis.
Is it the case that most fatigue data corresponds to average stress-life or strain-life curves fitted to a set of test data which relates to 50% survival probability...
Dear Experts,
I wish to buy a good engineering design book for use as reference.
Currently my workplace has the following:
• Machine Design: An integrated approach by Norton.
• Mechanical Engineering Design by Joseph Shigley.
• 27th Edition of Machinery's Handbook.
• Mechanics of Materials by...
Dear Experts,
Is there a standard available for the design dog clutch teeth and calculating the strength of same? Any resources I can follow up?
Best Regards
Eddie
Dear Experts,
I have 2 drawings (Pinion and Gear) which illustrates materials of class 86xx and 41xx with core yield of 500MPa and 850MPa respectively. Both have the same hardness specifications e.g.
30-45 HRc, case depth in mm with 50HRc and surface hardness up to 62HRc.
I need to do an...
Dear Experts,
I have to size a gear that is sufficient for momentary overload, for example a max stall torque.
According to AGMA, the gear material yield stress (Say) should be used to determine the max allowable stress instead of the fatigue bending strength (Sat).
1) By how much is one...
Dear Experts,
What products are normally used for mounting the axle housings onto the chassis?
We use trelleborg anti vibration cab mounts.
What is the normal way of sizing these mounts? My method: An FEA analysis on the housing which contains the reaction bearing loads due to applied torques...
