    Lifting slings for pickle process

Looking for the impossible here. Lifting slings that can stand up to being submereged in HF / Nitric mix, then Lime neutralization. Polypropelene, Nylon and 304 stainless all poor performers. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I can provide more information if required, though this is not a...

    Portable welding unit

Someone asked me if I had any information on a portable welding unit that is made specifically for butt welding stainless steel conveyors "in the field". I dont have a clue, which is why Im throwing it out there to see if anyone else does? Cheers

H11 hot work tool steel, heat treatment

I have compared data sheets from several suppliers and the heat treatment temperatures differ. I have a 4500lb extrusion shell that was inadvertantly left in a gas oven with a faulty controller. The setpoint was set at 960F but it climbed to 1400f and soaked for @12 hours. Some data sheets say...

    Container heating for extrusion press

I am looking for information regarding controlled heating of extrusion containers. I have found plenty of info for aluminium extrusion but nothing for stainless. With the elements I have today, I am only achieving a temp peak of @ 275f on the inner liner. I am looking for 450f+. Does anyone have...

    Pitting on O/D

I have a Piston made from 4140, flame hardened O/D and finish ground. It was stored on a wooden cradle with cardboard underneath. Unfortunately, there was no oil paper or other protective coating. I am seeing up to 0.016" pitting and localised corrosion where the cardboard was in contact...

Temperature zone to avoid IGA in Duplex material

Im looking through previous trials to assertain the best quenching process to avoid IGA in the material. The Temp ranges i see are anywhere between 1900-900f in 30 seconds (This seems like a wide range). Can anyone point me in the right direction?

    AMPCO 45 alternatives?

Does anyone have any experince machining this? I think it may be a little overkill for my application and Im considering alternates. It will act as a wear plate to control lateral movement. Original Dwg from a long long time ago calls for this material, but Im learning to question everything...

    Weldability of 4140, 4340 to H13

The 4140 and 4340 would be hardened prior to welding. The components would be tack welded together, and are under varying compression forces (These are mating faces). Question is what type of welding rod would best fit this application ? Cheers

    Compression forces

I have Four Tie-bars under a compression force of approximately 300t (75t each). Can anyone recommend equipment that could be placed directly on the Tie-bars, to measure for equal loading?. Cheers.

    Carbide Tipped saws vs HSS?

I previously posted this question in the wrong forum. I would like anybodys opinion on cutting stainless seamless tubing with either of these saws. They both seem capable, but with advancements in materials and cut profiles, its hard to tell which is better. I would definately be looking at low...

Reverse calculation to determine GPM, PSI?

Fluid Mechanics is not my field, but I have been asked to assertain what the correct GPM/PSI would be to effectively "flush" steel tubes out with a diameter of 1" and a length up to 60'. We do have an existing hose system, but I get the impression that it wasnt calculated in the first place...

Dirty water tank not getting filtered?!

Im puzzled at the filtration system in place. The tank capacity is around 10,000 U.S gallons. There is a 1/2 hp pump with a 1 1/2 inlet and outlet, drawing water from the bottom of this tank.(7ft head)To complicate matters, this is then going through a single stage, 5 micron filter and then...

    Carbide Tipped saws vs HSS?

Ive heard that carbide tipped saws have made some progress when it comes to cutting S/S, compared to HSS. Has anyone heard similar?. It seems in the past, carbide has had problems with high nickel and duplex grades. ("gumming up").

    Stainless corrosion. Passivate or no?

I am a mechanical Engineer and Im trying to get a better understanding as to what happens to stainless tubes when you use an abrasive cutoff + deburr. If you dont flash pickle, is the resulting corrosion caused by iron/contamination deposits, or is it thermal oxides, preventing air passivation...
