Volume Analysis Question - Wildfire 5.0

Hi All- I'm using Pro/E for the first time in a LOOONNNGG time, and I'm sure I'm missing something. Because I thought there was something like this in WF2... Say I have a cube with a hole through the center. How can I find the volume of the hole? Not the entire model, just the hole. Obviously...

    Negotiating a Raise

I know, I know. This has been killed a thousand times. I've read all of the other threads about it, but I'd still value some opinions on the subject. My boss just put in for my promotion about two weeks ago, and the time is coming to start talking about the raise that goes along with it. I've...

Sizing a motor to drag magnets around a steel plate

Hi All- I don't work with magnetism very often, so I'm not really sure where to begin to work this out. I have a motor with a shaft that's attached to a circular plate. This circular plate has ~30 magnets screwed into it. This plate will be rotating at a particular speed at a certain parallel...

Solidworks/SAP CAD Integration with Cideon Software

Anybody's company use this? Any reviews? It's being forced on us, and I'm considered one of the "super-users" (first person to learn it) of it. In using it, it seems quite tedious, and not very user friendly. If anybody has any stories good, bad, or indifferent about it, please share. V

Extracting Features to make a New Part

Hi All- SW08 SP 5.0 One of my colleagues has created a weldment as a part with many different features constituting the individual parts. He now wants to extract one or two of the features to make a new part. Can this be done? If so, how? Thanks in advance. V

Structural Question From a Mechanical Guy

Hi All- This is probably a simple question for you structural guys, but I want to make sure I'm correct in my thinking. I have a house, and I'd like to vault the ceilings. It's a one-story, with only attic space on the second floor. Attached is a rough schematic of the layout. It's an older...

    Helicoil into Quartz?

Hi All- I have a higher temperature (200-300 °C) application where I need to use a helicoil. I've never tried to use a helicoil in quartz before, and I'm wondering if anyone has experience with it (holding power, strength, etc.). It's not holding a great deal of weight, but I'm getting some...

Sites or Companies to find contract designers

Hi All- I'm in the middle of starting my own business. I actually have three clients, and I'm having trouble keeping up with the work load. I'm starting to mess around with the notion of contracting a mechanical designer to help me out. It would be an "odd" arrangement (meaning that I don't...

    Error during data management open

Hi All- We had a power surge in our building yesterday, and afterwards I-DEAS was no longer able to open. Upon startup we all receive the message, "Error during data management open. Operation continued. You should immediately export an archive file." Obviously, we don't have maintenance...

    Medical Grade Titanium Helicoil

Hi All- Anybody know where/if they make 'em? I'm looking for either Comercially Pure Titanium, TAV, or TAN. Doesn't have to be helicoil... could be any screw insert/ If anybody has any idea, I'd appreciate it, as Emhart wasn't any help. Thanks. V

A General, Why Does SW do this question

Hi All- Running SW08 SP3.0 I'm basically modeling a rectangular box (simply), and controlling the configurations based on the height, and a few other parameters. On the smaller heights, due to some of the features, I need to incorporate some cuts for clean-up purposes, so I suppress them in...

    Assembly Invisible?

Hi All- I tried looking back through the posts, but I couldn't find anything (nothing on Google, either). Running SW 08 SP5.0 I have a sub-assembly of my main assembly. Everything has been fine, but for some reason I just tried to open the sub-assembly and all the parts show up on the feature...

Free CSWP Test per license or per Serial Number?

I've been looking for information about this, and I haven't been able to find anything out. We've called Solidworks--they don't know, and told us to call our reseller. Called them--they don't know. Does anyone have any idea if the free CSWP test promotion from Solidworks is per Serial Number or...

Critical Speed below natural torsional frequency?

Hi All- I have a simple shaft, at the end of which is a disk that rotates about the same center as the shaft. Simple problem to find the natural frequency, I know. I have the natural torsional frequency solved as 1050 rpm; however, when we run the assembly (ramping up speed slowly), it starts...

    Variable Seal

Hi All- I'm trying to find a proper seal to use, but I cannot figure out a good type, or a good alternative. My parameters are: 1. I'm sealing from 10e-9 torr to 10e-6 torr (i.e. inside a vacuum chamber) 2. The seal has to be flexible (the shape I'm trying to seal is a triangle) 3. The seal...

    Broken Diameter on Drawing

All- Solidworks 2008 SP 3.1 I have a detail view (8:1) of an O-Ring groove profile. The center line of the groove is not shown in the view, and I'm looking to create a broken diameter dimension to reference the center of the groove. I know it's probably a simple question, but how is this...

Anyone ever heard of M1 Aluminum?

I know it's a vacuum molded aluminum, but what I really need is any kind of strength data--namely yield tensile strength. I'm having trouble finding anything on it. Thanks. V

    Tapping into PEEK

Anybody have any info on whether unfilled PEEK can be tapped into, or if it needs helicoils? My gut tells me that helicoils are necessary, but I just don't have any info to back it up. It'd be an M5 tapped hole, and I'd be putting about 40lbs on the thread, in tension. Thanks. V

Connecting Parallel Plates Without Bolts, Welding, or Epoxy

All- I have a somewhat odd situation. I need to connect two disk-shaped parallel plates. They need to be removable from one another (fairly often, this will happen); however, There can be no screw heads protruding on either parallel face. I'm thinking that I need to connect them around the...

Helium Gas Cooling (Convection vs. Static)

All- I have a situation where, in UHV (ultrahigh vacuum) I need to cool the underside of a flat disk. The disk dimensions are are a diameter of 200mm, and a thickness of between .02 and .07 inches. The underside of the disk will compress a silicone O-Ring to help seal the helium. The hot side...
