Does anyone run into this:
completly random example here...
Boss thinks you're spending too much time on the phone (again, this is a very "randomized" example). Instead of confronting YOU about your phone time, he complains to you about your co-worker John Doe who works in another facility...
Anybody deal with this one...
You're the head guy on a project. Maybe the only guy. You're busting your butt getting drawings done, stuff spec'd out, parts ordered, in on time, fabricated, basically everything that the machine is well...it "is" becauuse you exist and for no other reason. You...
Does anybody else ever have this problem: you get put on a project that's got a fire lit under it. Draw everything up, get the off-the-shelf parts quoted from your vendors. Some of this quote work involves engineering consultation itself or even people flying in to see the application. You...
Hope this is the right forum for this...
What is the difference between the following engineering job titles:
1. Lead Engineer
2. Head Engineer
3. Senior Engineer
Is there any difference at all?
We're trying to establish some job titles and having a bit of difficulty.
-Plasmech...
What are some insulators that have lower conductivity than fiberglass? Something between fiberglass and aerogel basically. Obviously it will cost more than fiberglass, but nothing NASA grade. Temp gradient is 350F to 68F.

I'm in need of a 30" inside diameter x 20" long bellows to be used for sealing (not a perfect seal). Temp rating must be 250F. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks.

I don't know what I was thinking...
During my recent calculations, I was worried about the thermal CONDUCTIVITY of my vessel wall, thinking, quite stupidly, that said wall would conduct heat away from the product at it's maximum rate, meaning that something on the outside skin of this wall...
Has anyone any experience using 2 mil Mylar film as a radiation block? Certainly more industrial than aluminum foil found in the supermarket...Does anybody have the "E' value of said Mylar film? Thanks.

Here's a real intellectually stimulating question for the group...
In Microsoft Excel and Word, where do I find the over-dot symbol for rate, for example: "Q-dot"? I can't seem to find it anywhere...

What is a good number to use for the convective heat transfer coeficient of air? I'm assuming *relatively* "stagnant" air...although I guess if the air really was 100% stagnant it wouldn't convect at all...

How would I calculate the thermal conductivity, k, of a "vacuum", meaning obviously a "thickness" of air that is not at atmospheric pressure? Would I simply proportion down the "k" of air? I other words, if my "vacuum" was 1/15th of an atmosphere, would I say that k=.025 (w/m*k) / 15 = .00166...
Sorry if this seems like a "stupid" question, but let's say I want to figure out how much energy is lost through a .05m thick aluminum plate, 1 square meter surface area, with a 100 degree K delta T. To find the energy transmitted:
Q=dQ/dt = k*A*dT/x = 237 w/(m*K) * (100K/.05m) = 474,000...
Is it possible to use ultrasonic energy to heat a solid, such as plastic? Will ultrasonic energy excite the mollecules on the plastic enough to heat them to say 350F? Or do the frequencies we currently have available limit the amount of energy we can dump in?
I want to make a spreadsheet that calculates how high different caliber bullets will go if fired straight up. Note that this (actually firing straight up) is something that should never be done in any corcumstance.
So I have the muzzle velocity, the bullet weight, and the drag coefficient...
There is a certain SALARY wed site, yes in fact it is a DOT COM (I won't mention which exactly one it is) that I am suspecting of being inaccurate on the high side. Have any fellow engineers checked out this particular salary web site and noticed the same thing? I feel that it's maybe as much...
I know, this is an impossible question. But...mechanical engineer who designes machinery of moderate complexity, does everything from concept layout, mechanical design, electrical design, R&D, testing. Has one employee under him. Southeast Pennsylvania.
What approximately should salary be...
I am taksed with designing a radial pressure fan from scratch. I am familiar with the fan laws, however they really only help when there is already a known fan with its own known empirical data to begin with...
Let's say I have to move 100 SCFM of 70 degree F air at a 25 inch of water...
OK I guess I'm half joking, or maybe only 25% joking...but has Aerogel gotten to the point where it's anywhere near reasonable as an industrial insulator yet? Does anyone sell it?
I have a machine that blows hot air (350F) into a tube that is 7 inches ID by 18.5 inches long. The tube is currently made of 1020 CRS, 18 gauge (.048" thick). The idea is that I want minimal heat loss in this tube, ideally having 350F air at the exit end. Here are thermal conductivity...
