Hello,
Is SMAW an acceptable welding process for caustic piping? Will the slag on the ID affect the corrosion resistance of carbon steel in caustic service or will the effect be negligible?
Thanks in advance.
Hello,
We have put out a few requests for quotation and Ni-resist was specified for the pump impellers. We have received some feedback from vendors that Ni-resist is no longer widely fabricated due to machining difficulties and 410 has been offered to us instead.
Is this a true statement? Is...
Hello,
What would be the best technique for welding heavy wall HDPE pipe sections together? Our pipe will be 20" diameter and 3" thick. In the past we have used hot plates for smaller and thinner wall pipe, but I am pretty sure this will not be adequate for 3" thickness.
Thanks...I appreciate...
Hello,
I have a weld map which shows 1" deep plug welds. The vendor changed the welding symbol from a plug weld to a fillet welds since he claims that the plug weld was done with a fillet weld fill procedure (I don't know what this means).
My questions are: Are plug welds considered to be full...
Hello,
API 600 CN 9 (Trim 9) just states NiCu alloy. Does this mean Monel 400 or does this mean any combination of nickel and copper? I did not see reference to Monel anywhere in API 600 (the older copies of API 600 used to say Monel).
Also, I received a corrosion resistant weld overlay weld...
Hello,
I have also posted this in the Pump engineering forum.
Would somebody be able to tell me if ductile iron and stainless steels are considered to be "non-sparking" materials? Our pump data sheet calls for non-sparking materials but the listed materials are A 536 (ductile iron) and 17-4 PH...

Hello,
I was wondering if the NACE MR0175 requirements are for pressure boundaries only or are internals applicable as well?
We are purchasing a compressor for a gas stream that contains CO2 and H2S. There will be no water drop out in the compressor, but NACE MR0175 requirements were requested...
Hello,
I have found conflicting information regarding the use of Viton in sour service. Does anyone have experience with Viton in sour service and is there a H2S limit for Viton?
Thanks!
If a fabricator will hot form a head at 1650F (SA 516-70N), is a new MTR required? They are essentially re-normalizing the material. Is ASME VIII UG-93(b) applicable in this case?
If a certificate of compliance is issued, do they need to issue support documents (i.e. tensiles, impact tests...
I have a weld procedure with a consumable insert. The PQR reported the filler metal thickness for the insert at 1/8" and then ER316L filler metal thickness at 3/16".
The consumable insert and the fill/cap pass filler metal have the same F-No. and A-No. (316L). The WPS does not distinguish...
Hello,
I am trying to figure out qualified thicknesses and group numbers for weld procedures qualified with impact testing.
1) PQR #1 was done on P1Gr1 to P1Gr1 on 1.5" plate, tensiles and bends only. PQR #2 was done on P1Gr1 to P1Gr1 on 0.249" plate, impacts only.
QW-401.3 states that only...
I can't find any information on the suitability of nickel alloys (Inconel, Incoloy, Hastelloy) in CO2 corrosion. Is this because this combination is a big no-no, or is it because people usually do not use this combination?
We have wet CO2, wet H2S and chlorides in the water so I have ruled out...
I have a CSA Z662 weld procedure that used the following materials in the PQR:
A 333 Gr 6, 406.4mm OD, 21.4mm thickness
Root: E6010
Fill and cap: E7018-1
Is this coupon automatically qualified down to -45C without conducting the impact testing? I know the A333 Gr6 and the E7018-1 have...
I know that 410SS readily pits in chloride service, and I read somewhere that CA6NM and F6NM are more corrosion resistant in chlorides than 410. Is this a marginal improvement, or can F6NM be used in services with intermittent high chlorides? In my searches, I cannot find any information...
I have been trying to find information on materials selection for water treatment plants but have come up empty handed. We have a hot lime softener in our water treatment plant and we need to specify the materials of construction for storage tanks for the following chemicals:
5-20% lime slurry...
Hello,
In NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 Part 2: A.2.1.6, cold deformation is restricted to 5% if stress relief is not applied. Does this apply to the pipe forming process?
We are ordering 30" DSAW API 5L-B pipe. The pipe forming operation will certainly exceed 5% outer fibre deformation. None of...
Does anyone know where I can find information regarding low temperature toughness values for 1045 steel and high-leaded tin bronzes (C93200 and C93700)?
I'm thinking 1045 in the quenched and tempered condition should have good low temperature toughness at -42°C, but I do not have any...
Does anyone know of a ballpark figure for a corrosion rate on CS if the hydrotest water is left stagnant for a few months?
I believe potable water was used without corrosion inhibitor, oxygen scavenger, or biocide. The heat exchanger was fabricated overseas, and when it was received and opened...
I have been reading several threads regarding Inconel 718 and chlorides. Sometimes this combination is not recommended and sometimes it is. Would anyone be able to help me clarify why?
A vendor is offering us a 718 spring instead of X750. The process stream is mostly oil with a few % water...
