Software recommendation for Steel Special Moment Resisting Frame?

Any design software recommendations for special moment resisting frames? Preferably simple to use modules like the ones in Enercalc or Tedds. Spreadsheet software would be even better. This is mainly for 1 to 3 stories residential construction. I found Engineering International spreadsheet but...

    Welded Stud Capacity in Concrete

I've been trying very hard to find published tables for tension and shear capacities of Nelson Studs embedded in concrete in imperial units but no luck. I only found one for metric units. https://www.nelsonstud.co.nz/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Nelson-stud-technical-information.pdf Does anyone...

Wood shearwall holdown at elevator shaft

I have a 4-story wood over 1-story concrete building. The elevator shaft wall is wood shearwall for the top four floors using a Simpson continuous rod tie down system. I'm trying to figure out how to anchor the tie-down into the lower floor 8" thick concrete shaft wall. Uplift on those anchors...

Minimum Foundation Wall Height above Grade Code confusion

CRC 2016 R404.1.6 says minimum height above "finished grade" is 4" for masonry and 6" for concrete foundation walls. CRC 2016 R317.1(5) says preservative treated wood siding, sheathing and wall framing on the exterior of a building is required when clearance is less than 6 inches from the ground...

Wood shear wall supported by transfer beam

Does anyone know how to calculate: 1) Deflection of the shear wall supported by a beam? What equation to use? 2) adequacy of beam to support shear wall? Do you just compare the shear wall moment (V * h) to the moment capacity of the beam? Thanks!

    Dismantling Joint vs FCA

When do you ever need to use a dismantling joint? I always use flange coupling adapters at locations where something needs to be disassembled such as at valves and flow meters.

Snaking of buried large diameter HDPE fused pipe

For small diameter HDPE pipes, sometimes it is recommended to snake the pipe in the trench if installed in hot weather to avoid thermal expansion/contraction stresses. For large diameter hdpe pipes, is this also done and if so how do you snake a large diameter hdpe in the trench? Thanks.

Is there a difference or is it the same thing? Thanks.

    Booster pumping in series questions

I have two theoretical questions: 1) What would hapen if an existing water line is flowing (say 5,000 gpm), and I place a centrifugal pump in the line with a pump curve that does not dexceed 1,000 gpm? 2) Can someone enlighten me why when you place two pumps in series, the outlet TDH and...

Does code require identifying wood grades of existing structures?

I received comments from the Daly City Building's Division in California and one of the comments is "Provide documentations and evidence to verify the lumber grades and species for the original construction (IBC/CBC 2303.1.1). All I am doing is installing a 4x4 skylight that requires cutting one...

weep rings at pipe penetrations through conc walls

I was wondering if anybody can tell me what the minimum weep ring size that needs to be welded ontop steel pipes to achieve a tight water-seal. I heard a 2" steel ring is all that is required to achieve a water tight penetration. Is this true? For my project, I have pipes ranging from 8" to 60"...
