Well, this is a new one. We received a new vessel and found during installation that the saddle baseplate was severely distorted. (See attached photo.) The gap is as much as 1/2" at the edges of the baseplate.
The OEM is suggesting we shim this, but I disagree that any amount of shimming...
I have some old high pressure reactors, built in Germany during the 1930s. All of the drawings are written in German, with English scattered here and there.
Need some help deciphering the stud bolt callouts. We are replacing the stud bolts since they have never been replaced (yes, you read...
I have an interesting request I've not come across before.
We have a vertical, ASME VIII-D1 vessel with some sort of rotating equipment inside, the driver of which is mounted onto a studded outlet in the bottom F&D head. (Sorry I don't know exactly what it is, the vessel drawing is written in...
Has anyone ever heard of "ASME Case 1056-B FQ" material? I'm trying to evaluate some old Propane storage bullets and this is the material listed on the U-1 form for the hemispherical heads. (See attached U-1)
Does anyone know where I can find data for this material?
Thanks.

I'm looking for some guidelines/rules of thumb as to what kind of leak test to specify for different piping applications. Of course, sometimes these are readily apparent due to the line's intended service and design pressures, but, for simple maintenance repairs, is there any way to determine...
Not sure if this is the right forum, so I will cross-post.
Simple question, how do I determine how much firewater is required for a defined "event" in my plant? Say, if I assume the most hazardous event is that my storage spheres catch fire, where do I then get a "requirement" for how much...
I rec'd the following error when trying to run my analysis:
"Value was either too large or too small for a Decimal."
Can anyone please tell me what may have caused this? We can't even get to the report to see what values may be causing the error.
I have uploaded the file in case anyone wants...
Hi all,
Is there a way to enter the empty weight of the vessel into Compress for use in a lifting lug analysis? I'm trying to design lifting lugs and a tailing lug...and do it in a hurry (the fab shop needs this yesterday). I know that usually I would run these calcs last - so all the vessel...
Not really a "code" question, I guess....but, I've got a self-supported domed-roof tank where the existing baghouse on the roof is being replaced with a much heavier one. The new one was installed before the engineering was completed. Now they're seeing that the baghouse sways when someone...
I'm reviewing a calculation of an existing vessel that was done in Compress. The existing vessel has four shell courses. The designer input the vessel as a single shell course over the OAL of the vessel.
Which is the proper method? I suspect entering each shell course separately, but I keep...
How does one analyze a piping system that involves two or more different types of pipe? The system I'm working on involves FRP connected to HDPE...then back to FRP. Pipe sizes are also different, but I can handle that.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
KLee777
When running Appendix 2 flange calcs in re-rating mode, where is the required minimum flange thickness (tr) calculated? For instance, in the output report for a body flange, tr is listed as a "given," meaning it's listed with the rest of my input parameters.
My flange isn't meeting this...
Has anyone seen a copy of API 650 Appendix V? I noticed that this appeared with the December 2005 Addendum (posted on IHS). My latest copy has only Addendum 3 (Sept. '03).
Is this the promised external pressure appendix to API 650?

I was asked to analyze two 6" S/40 nozzles (for instruments) that will be attached to a 20" 150# blind flange. This entire assembly will be bolted onto an existing nozzle. (I think the point of this was to avoid any welding on the existing vessel and have this blind flange/nozzle assembly...
The jacketed vessel I'm analyzing was built in 1959. None of the original design calcs, datasheets, or drawings match the as-built vessel. I'm to "update" the calculations on the jacket closure bar.
Turns out the bar itself is okay, but it imposes a large moment on the shell, causing failure...
Can anyone tell me if Zick's Analysis is limited to certain geometries? I know very little about it other than the original analysis was performed for 2 saddles.
The vessel I'm looking at is very long (60'+ best guess), contains numerous stiffening rings and I don't know the diameter yet...
Looking for a clarification of an equation in API 620...
When calculating the meridional and latitudinal unit forces (T1 and T2) in Section 5.10.2.5 (b) and (c) for conical roof and cylindrical walls, respectively, I noticed that there are two terms in the meridional equation (T1) that include...
I'm new to dynamic modeling in Caesar II, so please bear with me.
I'm analyzing a gas hydrotreater on which the heater feed piping is vibrating. (A little background: Hydrogen gas is dumped into the gas oil prior to a series of interchangers. After the interchangers, the 2-phase mixture is...
I've designed the lifting and tailing lugs for a very tall tower, and have determined that at picking, the skirt is likely to go oval without internal support (the designer obviously wasn't thinking about how to pick this thing up when designing the skirt and base ring).
Unfortunately, we...
