Partially Open Steel Framed Garage Protection

We've designed a 10-story steel framed office building over a 2-story steel framed partially open garage(the garage entries/exists are open, as well as some metal screened openings for airflow). The steel beams and columns will be spray fireproofed. The garage slabs are hollow core plank...

Rigid Insulation vs EPS Foam - Weights of Materials

The weights of material table in the steel manual and the minimum design dead loads table in ASCE-7 lists rigid insulation at 1.5 psf per 1" of thickness. Does anybody know what type of rigid insulation this is? It's heavy. EPS foam is typically around 1 psf per 12" of thickness (1 pcf). Thanks!

Can Precast Plank Brace Steel Columns in Direction Parallel to the Plank Span?

I'm designing a 9-story hotel using 8" precast hollow-core plank with a 2" topping, spanning to conventional wide flange steel beam lines (that align with unit demising walls) supported by HSS tube columns. The plank will bear over top of the steel wide flange beams. The columns are braced by...

Wood Wall Double Top Plates with Varying Elevations at Corners and Intersections

I have a standard 4-story wood multi-family project, where the pre-engineered open web floor trusses span between unit demising walls. Instead of using standard platform framing, the contractor has proposed to raise the elevations of the double top plates in an attempt to eliminate ladder...

Butler Foundation Design and Construction Manual

Does anybody know where I can get a hard or digital copy of the infamous Butler Foundation Design and Construction Manual?! Thanks!

    Existing Lumber Safety Factor

A contractor has had several samples of existing wood floor joists tested by a wood testing company. I just received the test results which include ultimate averages for the following: Shear parallel to the Grain (Fv) - 1,342 psi Modulus of Rupture (Fb) - 10,629 psi Modulus of Elasticity -...

Steel Transfer Beam supporting Wood Bearing Walls above

I have some 30ft long span steel beams transferring out 3 stories of wood bearing walls above. Using, L/360 or L/480 i'm limited to 1" or 0.75" total deflection respectively. I'm leaning towards limiting the deflection to a tighter limit like 1/2", since it is supporting gypsum sheathed wood...

    Expansion Joints in Mat Foundations?

Do large Mat foundations require expansion joints?

Top Cracks Parallel to Metal Deck Slab

I have 2.5" LW concrete on 3" x 16 gage composite steel deck (5.5" total) with 6x6-W1.4xW1.4 WWF draped over the supports. The typical deck span is about 15' and the deck was placed in 3-span conditions. The supports below are grouted CMU walls. As expected the top face of the slab has...
