    Make-Up Air for Condo

Hello, I am on the Board of Directors for my condo in Toronto and I'm wondering what is the code for the Make-Up air for a condo hallway. Is it dictated by ASHRAE or by the local building code? What is a typical value for such measurement. I assume it is listed in Air Exchange / hour? Is...

    Pin Hole Corrosion Acceleration

If I have a pin hole in a anti-corrosion paint, will corrosion be accelerated in the area where the pin hole occurs. The paint is applied to a 1080 Rail Steel. The Steel is currently corroding quite rapidly, and one of our ideas is to coat the steel with a anti-corrosion paint. One of the...

    1080 Steel Fine Pearlite

I am looking for a Fine Pearlite stucture after a piece of rail is thermite welded. The rail steel is essentially a 1080 Carbon Steel. Specifically the composition is: Weight Percentage, % Carbon, C 0.72 - 0.84 Manganese, Mn 0.70 – 1.25 Silicon, Si 0.10 – 1.00 Phosphorus, P...

    Weldability of ASTM A148

I am wondering how well ASTM A148 - (105-85) Cast Steel can be welded to a CSA 50W plate? We are currently welding a ASTM A27 Cast Steel to a 50W plate but would like to upgrade the material. Thanks in advance.

Switching from Mechanical Design to HVAC/R

I am trying to help a former co-worker who used to work in the Automotive Industry as a Mechanical Design Engineer. He designed automotive componenets for a parts supplier. We both have approx 10 years experience and I have moved on and found a job and he is still looking and finding this...

Post Weld Heat Treat Temperature - Standard Rail

I am looking for the PWHT (Post Weld Heat Treat) temperature for tangent (straight) standard rail 300 HB (Brinell Hardness). The following is the chemical composition (weight percent): Carbon 0.74 - 0.84 Maganese 0.80 - 1.1 Phosphorus 0.035 Sulfur 0.037 Silicon 0.01 - 0.060 Nickel 0.25 (max)...

Tempering to reduce eliminate Martensite on Rail

We apply electrical wire by thermite weld to subway rail. The thermite weld creates a btittle martensite area which has been known to crack. I was wondering if I can temper the metal on site (at the subway track). Is this possible and if so how? Thanks in advance

Can you mix Phosphate coated parts with non-plated parts?

I was wondering if you can mix Phosphate Grade I coated washers with regular steel bolts? Will it cause a galvanic reaction?

    Hydrogen Embrittlement for Phosphate Parts

I was wondering if you have to perform a post thermal bake for 3 hours following a Phosphate Grade I ASTM F1137 finish to prevent Hydrogen Embrittlement?

    Tumbling Test for Plated Parts?

I am trying to compared the durability of various grades of both Phosphate and Zinc plating. We (Engineers) were thinking that besides the ASTM B117 Salt Spray Test that we should do a test were the parts are tumbled and then evaluated for corrosion resistance because the bolt nut assym in...

Replacing Electrodeposited Zinc with Phosphate Coating

We are investigating replacing our Electrodeposited Zinc plated nuts and bolts with Phosphate + Oil due to the following reasons. Can someone please verify if these are true. 1)Phosphating is more cost effective? True or False? 2)Electrodeposited nuts and bolts will have a section on the...
