I looked at a late 1960's vintage building that has 40' long vertically laminated wood beams at 12' oc. The beams are made up of vertical plys as follows: (1) ply of 5/8" plywood; (2) plys 1-1/2" lumber; (1) ply of 5/8" plywood;(2) plys 1-1/2" lumber; (1) ply of 5/8" plywood. The total beam...
I'm a bit unclear on deflection requirements for Adhered Masonry Veneers. From what I can determine from both IBC 1405.9 & ACI 530-/ASCE5/TMS402 the requirement is L/600 both lateral and vertical.
Is that right?
Are there variations?
We are working on a retrofit of an existing building. Does any one know of rules of thumb as it relates to reasonable slopes for ramps in a parking garages. The parking will be heated and totally enclosed so ice will not be a problem except at the entrance and exit.
Any one out there have a feel for what kind of snow loads to use for a 150 sf canopy that is an architectural feature on the exterior of a building. The interesting thing is the roof is more like a sunshade than a roof as it is all aluminum bar grate with 1-3/16" spaces between the bars.
Full...
I'm trying to get my arms around a reasonable wind load to use for an architectural feature (an awning ? 140 sf) on a building I'm working on. It will be a fabric, to be determined later, it will have an irregular shape oriented in an irregular manner supported by a steel/aluminum framework...
Anyone have any experience with adding to a concrete edge ? The situation is this: we have a 10" PC plank cantileverd out to support a stone fascia that weighs about 55plf. The original detail called for a steel angle welded to an embed plate in the plank to support the stone. For a variety...
Anyone have any idea what Wind and Snow loads in the Halifax area are or where I can get the information? The specific area is Lunenburg, Nova Scotia
As always many thanks
I'm working on a project with one column of a moment frame embedded in a big fancy decorative/functional masonry chimney. The calculated deflection at the top of the frame/column which is about 34' tall is around 0.9". That drift seems ok to me, I'm concerned about the deflection compatibility...
I'm trying to calculate the torsional capacity of a 7' long box beam light gage header that has a torque introduced by an eccentric brick veneer. Does it make sense to consider the (2) vertical stud sections and (2) horizontal track sections to be acting as a group as a "closed section" ...
Anyone have any advise on when the dissimilarity of steel and aluminum becomes a problem.
I'm looking at a high end residential steel interior stair stringer that wants to have an aluminum extrusion anchored to it. The extrusion is what anchors a glass railing to the stringer. A typical...
Any body have experience with individual helical anchors as bearing support for independent columns?
I've been a little reluctant in the past to consider helical anchors, I guess its the engineer/inertia issue.
I'm working on a small project that has limited space and where a lot of excavation...
