I was recently asked to provide engineering advice about a remodel under construction on a recently purchased house. I found too many problems and told the homeowner I can't get involved with it. The only recommendation was to speak with any engineer and/or the local building department...
Hello,
Has anyone used Magnum Board AKA Magnesium board?
I'm curious about a few things:
How it's shear values compare to 7/16" OSB at the same nailing?
Also, if anyone has used it in contact to soil?
Thank you,
Jim Houlette PE

I've recently been asked to review structural plans from the 1980s where they plan to start building on abandoned foundations constructed in the 1980s. Does anyone know if this can been done? I can't think of too many major problems, just the minor problems of the condition of the existing...
I'm curious if many of you have been given design criteria from geotechnical engnineers that specify a maximum and minimum soil pressure outside the state of Colorado?
If so, how do many of you design the footings when you can not meet the maximum or the minimum?
For example: you have a...
I posted this in Geotech/foundations with no responses. I'm hoping maybe here in the structural area someone could give their opinion on my issue.

I am designing a club house that is curved and the builder really wants to use a post tension slab on grade foundation. The shape of the building is almost a half circle. Rough dimensions are 40ft in width, 180 ft in length (if the curve is straightened) and the ends of the curve come to 140...
I have recently been involved with a single family house where the rear was constructed roughly 1 1/2" higher than the front. The depth of the house is roughly 30ft. So it is fairly difficult to notice the unlevel floor walking on it, but an noticiable mistake. My question is: is there an...
Wood Shear Walls:
Does anyone know why 3/8" and 7/16" sheathing is to be nailed at 6" o.c. for intermediate members when studs are spaced at 24"? This comes from a footnote on allowable shear wall design tables (IBC or APA for example).
