    ASME QW-423.1 unassigned metals

ASME QW-423.1 permits welder qualifications to extend to unassigned base metals of similar chemical composition to base metals that have P-numbers. Does anyone have any experience in how "similar" a base metal's chemical composition has to be?

Using SHARPIE brand markers on stainless

I'd like to know of anyone's experiences (good or bad) using SHARPIE brand markers on stainless steel materials.

    ASME fillet weld size tolerance

According to the foreword in ASME Section VIII, "the Code does not fully address tolerances. When dimensions, sizes, or other parameters are not specified with tolerances, the values of these parameters are considered nominal and allowable tolerances or local variances may be considered...

    Factors of heat input

In calculating heat input (amps x volts x 60/IPM) on a weld, I'm interested in getting opinions on how much impact preheat and interpass temps have vs. the heat input itself as calculated by the traditional formula shown. None of the technical papers I've found incorporate anything but the four...

    Dissimilar welding of 317Lss (P-8) to SA516-70 (P-1)

Looking for recommendations on filler metal for welding 317L stainless to SA516-70 for a 650 deg F application. Typically use 309 for carbon to stainless joints, but would like to make sure that this particular dissimilar joint doesn't pose any additional issues.

    Welding 70/30 to HSLA-65

Has anyone done this successfully in either the GTAW or GMAW process?

NAVSEA Tech Pub 248 welder training

Does para 5.2.3.1 allow me to hire welders who were trained with a program under another activity's program? We would establish qualification per 5.2.3, but am interested in any interpretations regarding the training requirement.

    ASME definition of "corrosive service"

Has anyone come across a written definition of "corrosive service" for ASME Section VIII pressure vessels? I ask because UG-46(a) exempts inspection openings in vessels for non-corrosive service, but at what corrosivity is a vessel considered non-corrosive? Even air has some moisture in it...

    S9074-AQ-GIB-010/248 qualification limits

Previously entered this in another group, but thought it might be better suited here. These seem like simple questions, but I need to get some help answering them: My production joint is a double bevel (Mil-Std-22 figure 5) that will be done with a GTAW root and SMAW first side, followed by...

    S9074-AQ-GIB-010/248 qualification limits

These seem like simple questions, but I need to get some help answering them: My production joint is a double bevel (Mil-Std-22 figure 5) that will be done with a GTAW root and SMAW first side, followed by complete removal of the GTAW from the backside, and filling with SMAW so that I'm left...

    Mil-Std-1689A typo?

In Table XI, the first FCAW filler type is Mil-110TC, but I cannot find that material in existence anywhere, and am being told by vendors that it's probably a typo that should read Mil-101TC (which is readily available). Has anyone else come across this possible typo?

    Tensile test failure

Looking at a test report on a SA387 gr. 22 cl 2 weld coupon that passed the side bend tests, but failed both tensile tests in the base metal by 10% (ASME QW-153.1(d) only allows 5% below min tensile). Before testing, coupon was normalized @ 1650 deg F for 2 hours, tempered @ 1250 deg F for 2...

    Welding C44300 to SA516-70

Would like to know if anyone has experienced any problems joining C44300 to SA516-70. Also would appreciate any info on filler metal choice.

    Submerged Arc Welding of SA387

Running into a problem passing tensile and bend tests (incomplete joint penetration) on a Vee groove coupon of 1 1/2" SA387 gr. 22 class 2 plate with 1/4" land. FCAW backing pass, and sub arc welded with 1/8" dia OK Autrod 13.20SC with OK Flux 10.63 at approx. 550 amps, 31 volts, 15 IPM. My...

    SA333 gr. 3 welding

I'm welding 4" sch XXH SA333 gr. 3 pipe for ASME B31.3, and I'd like some of your thoughts on using E80C-Ni3 for the GTAW root and E8018-C2 for the SMAW balance. Do they seem like a good combination for a system with MDMT of -20 deg F?

Filler metal for GTAW of SA-333 gr. 3

Want to be sure I'm not over simplifying things for a B31.3 job, on a 4" XXH joint with GTAW (root) and SMAW (balance). If I use ER80S-D2 GTAW and E8018-C2 SMAW, is that "overkill"? Any input would help.
