Why is hydrograph recession limb stairstepping?

Does anyone have any ideas on why the recession limb of this hydrograph would be stairstepping like this? I have run several different storms on this watershed (6 hour 100 year, 24 hour 100 year, 6 hour Probable Max. Precip. adjusted for our location, and 72 Probable Max Precip. adjusted for...

    Emailing HEC-RAS files?

Remind me which files I need to include in order to email a HEC-RAS project. I am thinking I need to include .prj .p .f (the one specified in the .p file) .g (the one specified in the .p file) Should I delete the extra "Geom File=", "Plan File=", etc. lines out of my .prj?

    Smart/logical modeling

Cross-posted from water distribution: Does anyone have any tips for keeping your work logical when you are troubleshooting a model? When I am doing this, I'll change something here, change something there, try this, try that. I've tried making lists of what I changed, saving a new version of...

Pipes not flowing full - which program instead of EPANET?

We have a pipe running from a spring to a water tank in our water distribution system. This pipe is not flowing full. It is my understanding that EPANET cannot model this situation. Is there a way to work around this within EPANET? If not, what is the best (free) program to use instead? SWMMM?

Composite CN versus Percent Impervious - SCS Method HEC-HMS

Using the SCS CN Method in HEC-HMS: Are both of these correct to model a developed area? 1 - compute the CN of the basin in the undeveloped state and input this into the 'CN' field. Compute the percent impervious in the developed state and enter this in the 'percent impervious' field. Run the...

    Calculating Piped Spillway Capacity

I am doing a spillway analysis for a small pond/dam. The spillway is a 24-inch pipe. I understand how I would calculate the rating curve if it was a short culvert with a known tailwater (or range of tailwater levels). What if the spillway pipe extends thousands of feet before it gets to an...

    asparagus light fixture

Has anyone heard of an asparagus-head or asparagus-top light fixture? Supposedly it's a light fixture for a street light and it looks like a stalk of asparagus. I can find street lights that look (to me) somewhat like asparagus, but nothing that's actually called an asparagus-head or...

HEC-Pack - what are you paying for?

If you buy HEC-Pack from Bentley/Haestad, what are you paying for? It comes with Graphical HEC-1, HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, and HEC-GIS (aka HEC-GeoRAS). The only one that's not freely available is Graphical HEC-1. Is that all that you're paying for? Or do you get some other really great benefits...

Small culvert feeds into larger - how to calculate profile

I've been told to evaluate a 500-foot long culvert. The first 180 feet is 26" I.D. HDPE on a mild slope. The next 320 feet is 34" I.D. HDPE on a steeper slope. How would I evaluate this (calculate headwater, tailwater, capacity, velocity, etc.)? I've attached a quick sketch of the culvert.

HEC-RAS Open ditch to Storage Area modeling?

My basic question is how do I model a storage area that outfalls to a channel with no control structure? The details: In my detention system, I have a storage area (1) that outfalls into a channel through culverts. I am modeling this using the lateral structure option in HEC-RAS (unsteady)...

    HEC-HMS schematics in Versions 2.2.1 & 3.0.0

Harris County, TX requires the use of HEC-HMS version 2.2.1. So most of my HEC-HMS files are in version 2.2.1. I thought I'd try out 3.0.0 and see if I liked it. Once I worked with or saved files in 3.0.0, and opened them back up in 2.2.1, the basin schematics were destroyed. Using Notepad...
