HSS Square groove weld effective thickness

Hi! Simple question: When designing a square groove butt weld at the end of an HSS; Do I determine the effective Weld size as HSS Design Thickness (0.116”) – 1/32” Or should it be 1/8”-1/32”. The HSS is a 2x1x1/8 Thx

Moment Applied to End of Cantilever (Reinf Concrete)

If I have a concentrated moment applied to the end of a cantilever slab and lets say the moment is applied as a horizontal shear to the concrete surface (both top and bottom). Lets assume the bars are fully developed in the back span of the slab. My question is: Is the moment capacity limited by...

    AASHTO Spiral Reinforcing Area

Hi, I need a quick thought on this design approach. In the current AASHTO 8th Edition, the formula for calculating minimum transverse steel and for calculating member shear capacity due to transverse steel depends upon the value Av or Area of Transverse Steel. What is the appropriate value to...

Seismic Development Length of Bars (Column to Superstructure Conn)

For rebar development into the superstructure from the column is it correct include full length, or does the cover on the superstructure need to be neglected? For seismic analysis. Zone D Thanks!

Double vs Single Curvature Bridge Columns

While analyzing an existing bridge in CSi Bridge, it came to my attention that we don't (or at least I don't) have a good working definition of single vs double curvature. Here are the overall analysis steps: 1. Determine the Response Spectra (RSA) demand values 2. Perform Pushover analysis...

Appendix D Pryout for large members

So I have a post-installed anchor connection. All concrete is unreinforced, but members are large. My question is: Can I ignore Pry-out in Appendix D or can I modify the equation in Appendix D. Here is my specific case: The Slab to Wall Connection, the Slab is 8' deep and the Wall is 3' Deep...

    As Required / As Provided

Hi, Question: What Phi is required for calculating As Required? If the bar is in pure tension, and is being pulled out out of a wall, should the phi be 0.75 per ACI Chapter 17. Or can I use 0.9 per AASHTO. The design is per AASHTO. Thanks, Ben

    Simple CJP Weld Design Question

Ok, so maybe I have not had enough coffee yet....But here is a simple question. If I am designing a CJP Weld and Table J2.5 states that the "Strength of the Joint is controlled by the base metal", do the checks of the weaker base metal need to be per Chapter J4? i.e. 0.9 Fy for tension? Thanks!

Excavator Maximum Operating Ground Bearing Pressure

Does anybody have a rule of thumb for the maximum reaction for a large excavator? Put the entire dead plus pick on one point or on one track? Other ideas? Thx, Ben

Return Wall or Full Braced Wall...should the wall be designed for active or static pressure

Hi, I have a return wall in a retaining wall, the wall is steel soldier pile (single brace in strong axis) with timber lagging. If the soldier pile is fully braced by the lagging for the full height of the excavation, I assume the correct soil load diagram is 0.65*gamma*H*Ka or is it...

    Flexible Pavement Ultimate Bearing Strength

Hi, I was wondering if anybody has increased the bearing strength of soil based upon the addition of 3" of asphalt. I know how to include the sub grade into the bearing calculation with phi and c values...is there a way I can account for the top 3" of asphalt as well? I have a large static...

Anchor Plate at Edge of Concrete Slab

Hi, I am designing a plate with rectangular plate with four welded headed studs near slab edge. The plate has a large shear force being applied to the plate (toward the edge). Concrete Breakout with or without reinforcing using Appendix D, indicates failure. Use of slab reinforcing/ties to...

    Pressure tubing and structural tubing

I am looking for infomation on the following topic for a college report 1. Production of steel pressure tubes -- i.e. welding and fabrication 2. Tubes under extreme external/interior pressure -- i.e. isotropic loading. 3. Requirements and effects of underwater welding (on steel...
