I have a two sections of 10" pipe connected at flanges. The flanges look like they were made on-site when they were put in 35 years ago. One of the flanges developed a crack from one of the bolts. it's at the point where it drips to the floor and Marine-Tex didn't work as it has developed other...
I was calculating out my surface loading rate for my solids contact basin to see if we actually fell within the state regulation on SLR. We did under NJ rule running at 700gpm/1962ft2 = 0.356 gpm/ft2. I decided to go a step further and find out what the settling velocity was but using the...
I work for a water company and the town engineers have decided to replace a percentage of DI mains with PVC through a grant program. Since we don't currently have any PVC mains, what are the pros and cons of going with PVC. I just don't see it as strong enough and easily damaged during...
My utility has just started using a small trench box and I saw some issues that I felt weren't safe, are there any good books or DVDs that are available so I can get more information for myself personally?
I have been using Chlorine gas at my treatment plant for almost 25 years and now we may switch to a Calcium Hypochlorite system. Do the same rules for exhaust fans apply for Hypo as they do for gas? Is there a good Chlorine manual available? Thanks.
I mostly work on the water treatment side but am becoming more interested in the collections side. My town is very lax in these things and I won't learn it there. The information I'm looking for is how to calculate loss in gallons day/in/mile during water testing of pipes using a manhole or just...
I am looking to get some wooden plugs to keep on hand for times when a corporation might get pulled out at the main and was wondering if anyone here had any experience with them. What do you use to keep them in place after you hammer them into the stop?
I'm having a brain freeze trying to find what a crack in a main is called. Most common we deal with is a circular beam break but what is a lengthwise crack called?
Are there any good manuals or videos that cover repairs to gate valves? I have a 12" gate valve where the threaded rod that the brass 2" nut slides onto and then the smaller nut holds it on has broken off. It is functional right now if gentle but I don't want to damage it any more. Anyones help...

I have a Hach tester that is not designed to read Chlorine levels above 2.20 mg/l. For Iron I can multiply the reading by the number of times I split the sample but I believe the Chlorine residual is calculated a different way when split. Your help would be appreciated.
I am looking for inexpensive software or a MS Access/Excel database program to track water box shutoff and sewer clean out measurements and possibly property photos, mainly residential. I'm not looking for a full blown utility program just something that can be easily stored on a laptop for...
At my plant we have a well that we test for chlorides every three months and when the water first comes out it smells like tar. It goes away after pumping for a short time but what compound causes this smell?
I am looking for a listing of steps for disinfecting a new water main installation. I work in NJ and would like to find a standard that applies to NJ. I'm okay with the 24hr chlorination period but after flushing the new main after that period and achieving a system level residual is the...
My plant will be installing new chemical pumps and need a base for two W&T polymer pumps. Does anyone have information on companies that make stands or bases for pumps? I would like to raise them 10" to 12" inches off the floor. Any help would be appreciated.
I am looking for a listing of what color certain pipes should be colored in a treatment plant. I was told raw water pipes are red but have not found that stated anywhere. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I am looking for a good book, reasonably priced on coagulation and flocculation. I am treating ground water and doing coag/Floc/Sedimentation all in the same basin.
