Good Morning,
Does anyone know where I can find an anchorage assembly design standard for large flood gates? I'm not finding much on the Army Corps of Engineers website and these gates have large ball and socket joints (pintles). There more than just structural engineering that go into these.
Good Morning,
I've come across some Corps of Engineers drawings for miter and sector gates. They show Pintles and Hinges attaching these huge flood protection gates to the concrete walls. Does anyone know of a design standard for these hinges and pintles? The pintles are large ball and socket...
Good Morning,
Half size drawings (Typically 11x17 here) are pretty handy, but they just end up in one large stack. Anyone have a good idea for storing these in such a way that you can get to them fast?
We have a building that has been hit by an excavator. The web of the building wide flange column has been buckled, and the flange displaced out of it's plane.
Anyone ever use heat straightening to fix something like this? AISC claims it's more of an art than science. I'm not sure if this is...
Good Morning,
I have an odd question. We have a job that includes a wall with 2" of over on the outer most rebars. After form striping, you can see shadow lines of the resteel in the walls. Anyone else run into this?
I have a couple ideas, but they seem far fetched.

Hi Guys,
I took the SE 2 on Friday. I went in with the attitude that I need to provide them a good final design for the questions. I felt pretty beatup and didn't have enough time to finish with the quality I'd like. In some panic areas, I think I missed some things too.
How did you guys...
I have a theory question I hope you folks can help answer.
We often have slabs under uplift conditions due to high groundwater (out to out of exterior walls footprint under uplift) . We extend the edges of the slab outward to engage the soil as part of the "righting" gravity load, this soil...
Morning!
I'll be taking the SE 2 pretty soon. Anyone out there know how much analysis is on the test? The NCEES practice test only shows a Portal Method (not hard), but I'm worried about something more agressive.
Any throughts? For now I'll go through all the code stuff, and then backtrack to...
Good Afternoon,
I have a unique problem to ponder. I have a floor system supporting a 29,000 lb piece of equipment. The equipment usually runs at a relatively high RPM (about 2200 RPM) and does have isolators. The equipment rests on two joists 20 feet long that in the end have a second moment...
Hi Everyone!
I'm sealing drawings, unlike our normal proceedure, the client wants film/mylar prints. I'm using Sanford 58701 black ink and my stamp, I doubt it'll last.
Anyone else wet seal mylar? What ink is out there?
Thanks,
-A.
In the AISC ASD 9th edition manual, there is a reduction in flexural strength of a beam if bolt holes are too big in either flange (B10).
If the holes are too big, ASD goes on to state that the member flexural properties shall be based on the effective tension flange area Afe.

Good Day!
I'm in charge of designing a small section of steel sheet piling in sandy soils. To date, I've been able to complete the hand calculations based on foundation text by DAS. Very nice proceedures that my reviewers can follow.
The problem comes in with the dredge line. It slopes away...

Good morning,
I'm looking at a concrete pump station in south Florida. The wind pressures are reaching 83 psf (gross uplift) on the roof. I plan on using a precast concrete hollow core deck that will span 28 feet.
Anyone have a feel for when it's a good idea to just use a heavy deck, rather...
I see for Illinios endorsement you have to have 27 quarter hours in structural analysis and design.
Does anyone know what is defined as structural analysis and design? What about statics, dynamics, or even foundation design? I'm not too sure how serious they are over this requirement.

Hi Fellow Engineers!
I need to get registered in Florida for some upcoming work. From what I can tell of their statutes and administrative codes, there are no additional requirements for structural engineering in Florida. Can anyone tell me if that is the case? I’m getting mixed comments...
Good Afternoon!
I have a project that requires steel bar joists supported off light gauge metal framing. This is the first project I’ve done this one. I’m expecting end uplift reactions of roughly 850 lbs. Anyone have suggestions on how to make this transition down to the metal stud?
I have a situation where we want to anchor to a hollow core roof slab (precast concrete deck). The product is coming from Hollowcore Inc, and has 7-1/2" dia cores and 1-1/4" thick concrete "flange" over the cores. We'll anchor to the 1-1/4" thick concrete flange. Right now I'm assuming the...
