    Stretch of Welded Chain

Anybody have a resource/information on how to accurately determine the elongation/stretch of welded chain (specifically Gr80 Allow chain, but I am open to anything) under a certain load? I guess I am looking for some sort of effective area / modulus similar to how you calculate cable stretch...

    Guy wire terminations?

I am looking for some typical procedures and details used to tension and terminate guy wires used to support tall tower type structures (antennas etc). I assume all cables at a level are all tensioned at once to avoid unduly loading the structure. How is the actual tension measured? How are...

    Structural Design of Stone

Does anybody have any structural design guidelines/recomendations for stone (e.g. granite etc)? I am looking for typical allowable bending stresses, safety factors, really any type of codified guidance.

    Gapping Effects in L-Pile?

Does L-Pile account for the effect of gapping effects in cyclic loading on a pile in cohesive soils for its deflection output? I know it modifies the p-y curve for cyclic loading, but didn't think the additional deflection due to gapping was accounted for; however, I find no mention of it anywhere.

    14th Ed. Steel Manual

FYI if you haven't gotten a hard copy of the 13th Ed. Steel Manual, AISC is only shipping them through July 1, when they start shipping the 14th Ed. Manual: http://www.modernsteel.com/SteelInTheNews/?p=1213

IBC Compatible Accelerations for Non-US Countries

FYI USGS has launched a new utility that provides Ss and S1 information for countries outside of the US that are compatible with standard IBC design. It has limited datasets currently, but is growing. See: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/designmaps/ww/

Max bar spacing in concrete columns

Is there a limit in ACI pr elsewhere for the maximum spacing between longitudinal reinforcing bars in a column resisting only compression loads? For instance if I have a 48"x48" column, is it allowed to only place say bundles of 4 no. 11 bars in each corner without any reinforcement in between?

    RISA 3D -> SAP 2000

Is there a way to move a file from RISA 3D to SAP 2000 including loads and load cases? I am looking at exporting a CIS file with the exporter utility and importing that into SAP which can supposedly read CIS step files, but the results thus far are not encouraging (SAP can't fine the nodes in...

    Texas Stadium Implosion

I've seen videos from the outside of the implosion, but this one is a video from the inside where you can look around as the implosion occurs - very interesting: http://www.dallascowboys.com/farewell/Texas_Stadium_Implosion.cfm

    Wood Diaphragm to Masonry Wall

Trying to get an idea of what details people use to connect a wood diaphragm to the side of a masonry wall w/parapet. Any suggestions?

    Diaphragm Mechanical Fastener Inspections

When using mechanical fasteners (for example Hilti X-EDNs) in lieu of puddle welding for diaphragm attachment of metal deck to joists/steel beams, at what frequency do you require the fasteners to be inspected (e.g. 10% of anchors etc)? I could not find a standard governing inspection/special...

0.6D and the 1.5 SF for Retaining Walls Update

Since this topic seems to come up a good bit - for instance: thread507-238589 I wanted to make an update to my initial post on the subject here: thread507-202887 In that post, I had stated that the walls designed for IBC Section 1806.1 (for a safety factor of 1.5) did not have to meet the...

    U-Channel

What is the design code for the design of steel "U-Channel" (like the stuff you see supporting stop signs)? Any web references would also be appreciated.

Definition of a concrete columns vs. a wall

Could someone provide me with a code reference that indicates when a certain member is defined as a column vs a wall (aspect ratios etc?). Looking more as it pretains to min. reinforcing provisions and fire rating applications as opposed to strength design.

Tension Lap Splice of Different Bar Sizes

As an FYI since this topic has come up in the past (see thread167-173097), ACI 318-08 has finally codified how to treat the tension lap for dissimilar bar sizes: Section 12.15.3 "Where bars of different size are lap spliced in tension, splice length shall be the larger of ld of larger bar and...

    Flitch Plate Beam Design Article

The topic of flitch plate beams seems to come up a good bit on this forum - this month's Structure magazine has a quick article on the basics for their design: http://www.structuremag.org/archives/2007/June%202007/D-From%20Exp%20Flitch%20Plates%20DeStefano-pac-5-10-07.pdf
