    Windsor Probe for Grout Correlation

Windsor probe is for concrete, but is there a way to check grout strength with it? Is there a published reference somewhere that someone can give me to correlate the probe with grout? Is there a published reference where results of research says that correlations are not possible?

Merry Christmas - I have enjoyed this!

Merry Christmas - I have enjoyed this! Hope everyone has a happy new year and a much better year than the last. We may not always get what we want, we may not always get what we need, just as long as we dont get what we deserve (haha)!

Pile Load Test Plastic Settlement Failure Criteria

I reviewed a load test where a 25 foot 18 inch diameter augercast pile was loaded to 100 tons. The total deflection was 0.9 inches and had a net settlement of 0.75 inches. While the Davisson and other popular interperative methods do not have a criteria for net settlement, the local building...

Load Test Plastic Settlement/Unit Load Criteria

I reviewed a load test where a 25 foot 18 inch diameter augercast pile was loaded to 100 tons. The total deflection was 0.9 inches and had a net settlement of 0.75 inches. While the Davisson and other popular interperative methods do not have a criteria for net settlement, the local building...

Scour Depth for Augercast Piles on Beach

Last year in Florida I saw most of one beach dragged off in a hurricane. I usually neglect the top 10 feet for scour for buildings along the beach with pile capacity design, which is a local practice approach. Anyone know a more formal reference to substantiate this local practice? Is that too...

Fellenius and 'Locked in Load' on Piles

I have trouble understanding Fellenius's concept of a 'locked in load' during the pile installation process. I have read numerous papers from him about this, especially those emphasizing that measurements from strain gauges before pile installation must be incorporated into the analysis of load...

Estimating the Modulus of Elasticity for Grout

An estimate of Young's Modulus for concrete is 57,000(f'c)^2. For cement grout mixes used in augercast piles (usually 3000 psi to 8000 psi), does anyone know of a similar equation to estimate the elasticity? Based on laboratory testing, elasticity of grout is not anywhere near the elasticity...

To Publish or not to Publish? That is the Question

I will pose a question: Someone has done a significant amount of testing/instrumentation on local soil/rock/layered soils, and have determined local modulus/soil parameters. Currently, many would like to publish this research, making a name for themselves, and many would benefit. However, is...

Ponding Water: Hydrostatic Pressure on Pool Wall?

I have a pool that floated out about 1 foot. The homeowner's lawyer is claiming that during construction of a house next to the property, the diverted rain runoff to the pool area raised the water table and caused the pool to float. I have not done borings there yet, but that area generally has...

    Battered Pile Load Test

If a load test is performed on a battered pile, should it be performed with the loading along the pile axis, applied on the top vertically, or other? Would a fixed head condition load test be different from a free head condition load test? I might actually have to do this in the next few months...
