Restraints for static stress of a cylinder

If I want make both end faces of a cylinder keep perpendicular to the axis while allowing free movement of one end face in axial direction, what would be the best way? I tried a few settings, getting not very satisfactory result. One of the settings I used is : 1) make a reference axis. 2) set...

How good is Brownell & Young's Method to Design Base plates

Can anybody make a comment for me on how good is Brownell & Young's method to design steel base plates for vertical vessels/towers?

base plate thickness and bolt preload

I am checking base plate thickness calculations produced by a software. I see that bolt preload is affecting the calculated thickness quite much. It seems to me right. However, formulas in my aonthor reference book(Pressure Vessel handbook by Eugene F. Megyesy) doesn't show anywhere the term...

How would g(gravitaional acceleration) affect vibration?

This is not a practical problem. Rather, it is a problem to understand vibration in general sense a little more. To calculate fundamental period of vibration, I often use Rayleigh approximation which is T = 2* pi * [(summation(W*y^2)/(g*summation(W*y))]^0.5 where W=weight of each...

Overlay weld on tubesheet of a heat exchanger

In Section VIII Div 2 Part UCL, the Code reads rules in UCL shall apply to vessel which has over lay weld. If the tubesheet of a heat exchanger is going to be over lay welded to enhance seal weld reliability of tube to tubesheet joint, is the Part UCL still governing?

    Allowable Hydrotest stress

Can anyone tell how allowable hydrotest stress should be determined for flat heads or tubesheets?

Stress in shell due to thermal expansion of a heat exchanger

I am very wondering why heat exchanger design methods don't consider shell thickness in view of longitudinal stress(compression or tension) due to thermal differential expansion of fixed tubesheet type heat exchangers. I looked into K.A.G. Miller's method to design fixed tubesheet and ASME...

    Fundamentals of seismic design

I am working on steel structures, more specifically pressure vessels. I use seismic codes. I came to think that I need to understand fundamentals first before I can apply the seismic codes correctly. I hope someone recommend books or any other source I can start to study with this purpose...

    Graphitization

I'm designing a boiler steam drum/evaporator. Problem is temperature. Flue gas design temperature is 685 C(1265 F). Flue gas flows thorough the tubes in the drum. Tubesheet(or called head) is also exposed to flue gas. Tubes material is SA192 and tubesheet material is sa516-70N. Both materials...

    Radiography(RT) requirement of Steam accumulator

ASME VIII Div 1 requires full radiography on all butt welds on shell and heads of unfired steam boilers higher than 50 psi. Should this requirement be applied to steam accumulator as well? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    A problem in Rayleigh Approximation(NBC)

I am hoping to hear any suggestions or comments from fellow engineers regarding following point. NBC(Canadian Building Code) uses Rayleigh Approximation to calculate period of vibration. T=2*pi*sqrt(SUM(Wi*di^2)/g/SUM(Wi*di)) where Wi = weight of ith section of the structure di =...

    Rho V^2 in heat exchanger

I would like to learn something. In heat exchanger, what importance does Rho V^2 has? Is it very important parameter? If so, why? Can anyone help me out?

Difference between Joint efficiency and quality factor

When we calculate required minimum thickness, we use E value which ranges around 0.5 to 1. In some formula, it is called joint efficiency, other formula refers it quality factor. What is the conceptual difference? Could anyone explain? kyong

    rule for selecting fouling factor

Hi, Is there any code rule for selecting fouling factor when designing shell & tube heat exchanger? Similarly, is there any rule for selecting allowance for roughening/plugging of tube inside surface when calculating head loss along tubes of shell and tube heat exchangers? Any comments would be...

    Head loss through a hole

I need to know head loss through a circular hole on a 1/2" steel plate. Across the plate water is flowing through the hole. Flow rate is 1000 gpm and hole diameter is 5". My calculation is like this. H=1.5 x V^2/(2xg) = 6.2 ft. Am I right? Any suggestion would be helpful.

    Curvature of 2:1 SE head

Has the 2:1 SE head really elliptical curvature? I mean that do the manufactures make heads with gradually increasing curvature from edge to center or do they use only two curvatures, i.e 0.9d in central area and 0.137d in outer area. If they use gradually changing curvature, the axis ratios in...

Allowable Combined Stress in WRC-107 analysis

What should be the combined allowable stress for an nozzle external force? I used two softwares to check nozzles subjecting external load. Two softwares have different allowable combined stress. Compress says 3*S is allowable combined stress. And in the manual, they explain that the factor 3 is...

    Allowable Stress of A106-B

Can anyone tell me the allowable stress of A106-B pipe in ASME B31.3? I know that allowabe stress of this material in ASME Boiler and Pressure vessel is 17.1 ksi. And I found that it becomes 15.0 ksi in ASME B31.1. I need to know the allowabe stress in B31.1 while I don't have the CODE.
