We're performing Iosipescu ASTM D 5379 shear lab tests and using foil gages to measure the shear strain. Vishay makes a custom gage for the application, but we had some difficulty with results, lead time and cost.

I'm trying to estimate the lateral / in plane displacement for a problem that amounts to a plate subject to normal pressure.
Research and trial so far makes me think this data can't be obtained from plate elements - in plane displacements always show zero. Trying other formulations but so far...
How is the DOF spring tension / compression sign convention determined?
I would think it would be independant of element coordinate system, a simple nodes closer -> compression, but my results seem to contradict that.
Better yet, what is the appropriate documentation to check for this?
Does anyone have experience with this spacer sleeve (or any spacer sleeve) in a solid (BJ) rivet stackup? NAS42 spec calls this a "Spacer, Sleeve - Rivet" but I have not previously seen spacer sleeves used in rivet stackups.
ID is appropriate for a solid rivet installation, and aside from the...
Is there any way to edit Femap libaries in a "sophisticated" manner? The only options I seem to have (v10.1) are add and delete. I realize I can open them via a text editor and edit in that format, but this is still time consuming for simple tasks.
Examples of things I'm looking to do:
Sort -...

Hoping someone here has some input.
I'm told the MRS stands for "minimum residual stress" and I see it is made by Alcoa. It has been mentioned on this site a few times, but no mention of whether the standard material properties are...
Do the MMPDS properties apply to sheet 2024-T3 identified as MRS?
Can anyone point me to the relevant specifications or literature to understand the specifics of 2024-T3 when supplied as MRS? I don't see anything in MMPDS, AMS QQ-A-250 (or /5), etc.
Thanks.
I would like to capture the value of a function evaluated at each step of a while loop. It seems I should write the values to a vector, but I can't figure out how to write the values to a vector (dependent on indeterminate number of iterations of the loop) and then have the vector available...
I can't seem to wrap my mind around the solve blocks in MathCAD. Trying the attached problem - simple enough to solve by hand, but I just can't get MathCAD to provide the solution to the system of equations via the solve block. Three equations, three unknowns. Units consistent (though the...
A French court recently ruled that Continental Airlines and a mechanic in their employ are guilty of involuntary manslaughter and liable for the deaths of 119 in the crash of Air France flight 4590.
At issue in the guilty verdict was an incorrectly fabricated / installed wear strip which is...
Looking for a way to determine the "chapter number" for the current selection in the document (and write it to a variable). Although the outline property I refer to must be in the document properties somewhere in order to be used in the footer, I can't figure out how to access it.
The "chapter...
I'm trying to get some Mathcad sheets presentable enough for formal reports and find the formatting difficult.
I'm interested in tips or tricks you use to make the final product look more professional.
Here are some specific issues I'd like to address:
-Variable re-definition underlines, the...
Trying to utilize units in Mathcad is frustrating me.
My equation results are always output with the units reduced to base dimensions. For example, a torque value in in-lbf gets returned as lb-in^2/s^2.
Is there a way to stop this function of unit reduction? I see nothing in the help files...

The severe winter weather that paralyzed the East Coast beginning Feb. 5 took a heavy toll on the Dulles Jet Center (DJC) at Washington Dulles International Airport, with three of four of the DJC hangars – each filled with high-end business jets –...
I've recently been doing some passive job searching. Basically just testing the waters as the job market comes back to life.
Here's the question - for one company I'm interested in the online application process requires you fill in a "profile" before you can apply to a job. The profile...
I'm interested what the "standard" is for modelling bolted attacments in small (thin) components. In the past I've only done analysis where the fasteners could be easily modelled out with appropriate BC assumptions, and I wasn't interestd in the fasteners themselves. Now looking at componenet...
When installing rivets in aircraft structure (sheet aluminum), what, if any, adjustment do you make to the joint shear capability for solid (AD) rivet installation with a sealant (wet install)?
Niu suggests a 20% reduction if no test data is available. MMPDS specifically discusses the rivet...
I need to be able to append text to an existing cell without changing the existing text colors. My current code looks like this:
If ActiveCell.Value = Empty Then
ActiveCell.Value = Item & Chr(10)
'TEXT COLOR ROUTINE
With ActiveCell.Characters(, Len(Item) + 1).Font
.Color = RGB(r, g...
I have a table of data (see attached example), from which I'd like to extract the maximum load at each attachment location. This is relatively easily done with a pivot table. However, I'd like to list the associated load condition for the maximum load, which I can't seem to figure out. A...
Does anyone here have any reccomendations for online (accredited) aerospace structures programs?
I think I've convinced my company to allow me to pursue this education route, and I'll be filing application paperwork withing the next few months. I've got a solid undergrad background with a...
