    Contract Acceptance

I'm not sure if this is the correct forum for this question, but here goes. I am considering adding a clause in my contract that states that payment for services constitutes acceptance of the terms and conditions of the contract regardless of it being signed by the client. Is this legal or...

    "Temporary" Phreatic Surface

Please refer to the crude sketch below. I am trying to determine the phreatic surface between a below-grade stormwater infiltration system and a vegetated, mechanically stabilized earth wall. The wall will be about 15 feet tall. The wall will consist of layers of clean sand (SP) and geogrid...

    DFI Fundraiser

FYI: Dr. James K. Mitchell is going to be the guest speaker at teh DFI Fundraising Dinner. The topic is "Personal Reflections on Geotechnical Giants I Have Known". For more info, see http://www.dfi.org/events/TrustDinnerInvitation.pdf

    Chemical soil grout gel time

Does anyone know the proper method of measuring gel time for chemical grout? The only thing I can find is ASTM D 2471 Standard Test Methods for Gel Time and Peak Exothermic Temperature of Reacting Thermosetting Resins. I'm not sure if this is the correct procedure for soil grouting though.

    Hydro-Compaction of Sand

OK. I have heard this from contractors time and time again. They claim that by totally saturating soil, then letting it drain, it will "compact" the soil. In all of my years of experience I have never seen this as an effective technique. I can understand that it is possible for fines to...

    Wet silt

I have a little construction issue. We have a project where we did the geotechnical evaluation for a single-story, slab-on-grade structure. We encountered medium dense silty fine sand to a depth of about 3-4 feet below the ground surface. The sand was underlain by loose sandy silt to a depth...

    Dilatometer info

I was researching flat dilatometer information and came across this web site: http://www.marchetti-dmt.it/ It has numerous papers that are downloadable.

    Geotech Jokes?

Hey all, I'm teaching a one-day short course on deep foundations and I'm trying to find a few jokes to lighten things up. I only know one geotech joke and it goes like this: If you look up "boring" in the telephone book, you find Geotechnical Engineer. I know it's not a good one, but I don't...

    Settlement behind retaining wall

I have a bit of a conundrum. We have a project that is a new school building. Part of the school has a lower level and part is slab-on-grade. At the interface between the two levels, there is a below-grade retaining wall. The wall retains about 13 to 14 feet of soil. The subgrade materials...

    Buried Peat problem

Ok, I have a lulu of a project. Here's the scenario: My client is planning on constructing three single-story, slab-on-grade retail structures on a site that has been filled periodically over the past 10 to 12 years. Column loads are in the range of about 80 to 100 kips. One of the...

Friction factor between soil and vapor barrier

Can anyone point me to a reference with friction factors between polyethylene vapor barriers and different soils? I am specifically looking for polyethylene and SP sand. Thanks!

    Flume sand?

I am working on a project in Indianapolis where the contractor wants to use flume sand as engineered fill. I am not sure of the gradation. We will be doing a sieve analysis on the material. Are there any specific issues with using this type of material beyond normal grain size issues? They...

    Interesting Katrina Post

I am involved with another forum that is primarily interested in promoting conservative politics. There is a thread posted there that provides a very detailed analysis of the levee breaks. I am not sure of the qualifications of the person that has produced it, but it does have some very...

    Housel Soil Mechanics

If anyone is interested, I have a copy of "Applied Soil Mechanics" by William S. Housel. I believe the book is out of print. If you don't have info on Housel, he was a Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Michigan that had a method of soil mechanics that conflicted with...

Repair of Segmental Block Retaining Wall

I am working on a project that involves a contractor that constructed a segmental block retaining wall (Rockwood Classic 6 block) without the benefit of engineering. Consequently, the wall is now starting to overturn and/or slide. I am trying to come up with some different alternatives for...

Uplift resistance of underreamed drilled shafts

I am having a bit of trouble determining the uplift resistance of the underreamed (belled) portion of a drilled shaft in cohesive soils. In Fang's Foundation Engineering Handbook, a reference to Kulhawy says that "based on empirical studies for shafts with D/Bs > 10, there is little apparant...
