Will straightening cast steel cause internal stress?

Will straightening cast steel cause internal stress? Our supplier is proposing the following process. Cast steel part, heat treat to hardness spec, and then straighten the part in a form. Is this going to introduce internal stress that will relax over time? Is this a standard process for cast...

Torque and preload calculations for threaded tubing

I am trying to define torque and preload requirements for threaded tubing. I am using standard fastener equations to determine pre-load at a particular torque value. I used standard fastener equations to determine the tensile stress area. I then subtracted the area that is considered hollow...

3A capscrew with a 2B nut or hole?

I am trying to see if this is an acceptable combination? Class 3A has a tighter tolerance then a class 2A. But is the 3A tolerance always within a 2B? Is this acceptable attachment? Or should I force my customers to use a 2A bolt with a 2B nut.

Can I increase the weld size after the weld has been completed?

I have some 1/2" plates there were welded together with 1/4 fillet welds. I probably should have welded them with 3/8" or 1/2" fillet welds. Can I put another bead ontop of the initial? Or is this just not possible. The material is ASTM A572 Grade 50

Fillet weld full penetration for plate in vibration fatigue?

I have a 1/4" plate that is welded to a 1/2" plate. The 1/4" plate is subjected to a vibration type fatigue load. The current weld is 1/4" fillet all around the 1/4" plate. Our supplier is actually oversizing the weld and is looks to be about 5/16" Both plates are ASTM A572 Grade 50 Looking...

Does heat treat effect the stiffness of 4140 type material?

I am trying to calculate the deflections when a 4140 bar is loaded. Do the properties change when it is heat treated to around 35 Rc? I am guessing I would adjust the Youngs Modulus. any suggestions?

    Wildfire 2.0 Mechanica Fastener connection

Anyone have the new release of mechanica? There is a "new" fastener feature. I have not been able to get it to work without an error message. "The inner contaction surfaces of the fastener are too far apart. You will probably need to create free connections between the fastened parts." I...

Difference between Full Depth and Stub Involute (20¦)

I am looking at some data for an existing gear we are using. It is defined as a standard Stub Tooth gear. (it currently mates with another stub tooth gear) Is "stub tooth" considered a standard gear type? Is the 'stub tooth" utilized to reduce wear on high loads? Reduce wear due to gear...

    Intralink file status (read only?)

When we currently check files out of commonspace, it was leaving "intent to modify" on the files. this caused other users to see an error message when using an assembly with the same part. (with no intention to modify it) In the intralink options we set the status as "clear" when we check...

Clarify the time it takes to fill an air cylinder

I have a cylinder that needs to be pressurized with air. My standard setup has a 50psi air hose direct into the cylinder. This gives my standard "X" fill time. My modification will re-route the hose, using adapters and fittings. Assuming I don't reduce the cross sectional area of...

Any suggestions on using connections to limit movement?

This is hard to describe what I am trying to do.....I will simplify it some. I have a plate that will push on an I-beam. There are no physical connections, (bolts or welds) This should allow the thick plate to remain stiff, while the I-beam deflects. If I run the FEA with Pro/e defaults, it...
