Is this a NEC Service Switch?

This is USA and NFPA as well as other US codes are in force. I have just returned from a generator and transfer switch start-up. The transfer switch is rated a “Suitable for Use as a Service Entrance” and the AHJ has signed off (although at the time of inspection the transfer switch was not...

    What is happening here?

This is a one month old sewage screening device. It is in an enclosed rated area and it's not pleasant, but not as nasty as most headworks. I have used 304 with 316 fasteners for years for this application for years and never saw anything like this. There was no welding done during or after...

    Bearing Damage? No.1

Any ideas? Two row self aligning bearing removed from a cantilevered mixer, shown is from the lower row, upper row appears undamaged. Seals were intact, cavity was full of clean grease. Mixer blades were nicked, assumed damage from concrete debris striking the blades. Thanks Steve

Anyone use VFD designed cable in water wells?

I have done the design work required for municipal drinking water wells for a about 30 years now. The trend, lately, is to use a VFD to power the well pump. I have always used steel conduit from the controller to the well head and the driller/installer has used individual wires down the well...

    VFD Over Current Protection

I have a C-H MCC with a section containing a 50 Amp circuit breaker and a C-H VFD dseigned to control a 25HP motor, all new, not yet powered. Turns out the device being powered has a 10HP motor. Any problems? I am thinking of NEC motor protection. Thanks; Steve

    Could this be?

I have a simple weighted arm swing check, 8-inch, horizontal installation, resilient seated, NOT installed as a check (not intended to prevent backflow). The valve opens in the direction of flow and is bypassed by a two-inch connection (18-feet sched. 40, two ells, one magnetic flow meter and...

    Pipe Call Out

I am checking some shop drawings and one item, a flanged wall pipe is noted as: “DIA 24” x 24” LG FLG W/S FLG UNTAPT W/S center” Can I assume that W/S stands for “water stop”, and the flanges will have standard holes to accept pass through bolts? Thanks Steve

    VFD Malfunction

I was recently called to look at a problem at a well pump facility. Installed is an Eaton SVX9000, a TCI KMG Sine Wave Filter, 4400 feet of motor wire in buried PVC conduit and a 20 HP submersible well pump. The system has operated since 2008 without any problems. Four weeks ago it was found...

    Identify This?

A friend sent me these two photos and asked if these components could be air release or air/vacuum valves. This assembly is installed at the high point of a sewage force main. Although the set-up looks very much like a standard APCO 1800 Combination Valve, I can’t identify what looks like a...

    What caused this?

I was recently asked to investigate a loss of capacity problem with a drinking water pumping facility. I found two split case pumps with a shop drawing capacity of 800 GPM @ 214 feet each. Only one pump can run at a time (electrical interlock). Both pumps have a flooded suction with water...

    304 in Anaerobic Digester?

Does anyone have any experience with using 304 SS piping inside a municipal sludge anaerobic digester? I am looking for serviceability both submerged and in the gas space above the sludge. Thanks Steve

    SS Digester Roof

I am looking at a design for a 50 foot diameter sewage digester cover (roof). It has 20ea 3x4 inch arched tubes 23-foot +/- long extending inward and upward from a 50-foot diameter tension ring and ending at a 2-foot diameter compression ring. The rings are either 3x3 tubes or 3-inch pipe...

    10 HP motor, 460 V/35A

I am looking at a submersible mixer motor, 10 hp, 580 RPM (this is motor speed), 8.15 KW operating point, 460 volts 3 phase, 35 FLA. I had designed for a 10 HP motor and specified feeder and starter for 15 FLA. Does 35 amps make sense? Steve

    NMR Magnet Shielding

I have been asked to help with the installation of a 300 Mhz NMR magnet and aux. equipment. The problem is that the room is only 15 feet wide and the 5 Gauss field extends about 3 meters in the x-axis all around. Can I just cover the interior walls, in the area where the 5 Gauss contour is...

    Pumps won't make shut-off

I started up two Grundfos CR 5-7 pumps yesterday. The pumps are marked with a shut-off head of 225.6 ft. I have a curve that shows the same, as near as I can read, not sure of the .6. The curve indicates a 3501 RPM speed. These pumps are driven with 2 HP 3450 motors, and I wired them across the...

    2-cycle Automobile

Does any one know of a car manufactured in the USSR in the 50's or maybe the 60's that was made without a transmission, or clutch? The engine stopped when the car stopped and when the accelerator was pushed forward the engine started in the forward direction and when pushed with the heel...

    304 with Galvanized Steel

For years I have specified 304/316 fasteners for use in plants treating domestic sewage, in submerged and exposed conditions, with no issues that I know of. I recently specified some galvanized clairifier arms and 304 fasteners. A co-worker pointed out to me that this may result in damage to the...

4 to 20 ma loop and lightning

I have used this design for many years and have two recent failures. A loop powered pressure sensor is installed in a manhole near a water tank. This device senses the water level in the tank. 4,000 to 5,000 feet away, at the well site is a 24 volt power supply and PLC input. Two of these, about...

    Molasses v/s Methanol as BOD

I have a client with an activated sludge treatnent plant. This plant serves a tourist community and winter time flows drop to about 2% of design flow. The operator is thinking about supplying supplemental food during the winter. I am thinking of methanol or molasses(animal feed grade). Any...
