old ASD version of Hollow Structural Sections

I need to do eqn. 9.3-3 in ASD. My LRFD version of it has a phi of 0.75. Is the eqn. the same for ASD and what is omega so I can replace phi with 1/omega?

Suggestion for Solver-like functionality for the web?

I'm wanting to duplicate an Excel spreadsheet I've developed which uses Solver. Any suggestions on a solver-like tool I can use to run a web-based simulation on a .NET server? Thanks!

    Pressure bulb for buried plate

Boussinesq is for a footing atop a half space, but I have seen a chart for a buried plate with negative contours above the plate that were not just a mirror image of those below. I'm interested in influence of consecutive plates. I thought it was Prandtl but found nothing in a search. Can...

    Lincoln Welding book title

I did a calc I had saved based on the torsion chapter in the old, 1960's? Lincoln Welding big black book. I'm being asked the source. I could not find the book at the Lincoln web site. What is the proper name of the book? Besides torsion, it had a chapter on castellated beams, if that helps...

Critical depth for end bearing piles

The COE's Design of Pile Foundations lists a critical depth, 10 to 20 pile diameters, beyond which end bearing does not increase. I cannot understand why this would be applied to end bearing. Engineering is the art of not constructing...of doing that well with one dollar what any bungler can...

    Pile load test

The 2003 IBC lists three types of evaluation to determine pile failure. The third is Chin-Konder Extrapolation. I could not find any info with an internet search. Does anyone know how this test measures failure? Engineering is the art of not constructing...of doing that well with one dollar...

    Do I need GL Insurance?

I've been doing inspections and footing design. My GL is twice my E&O. Last year I was making piling, but have since spun that off. Only employees my sec'y and me. Renewal in 1 month and I'd like to save that $. Engineering is the art of not constructing...of doing that well with one dollar...

    auger to test soil bearing

A local professor had recommended an auger about 1" diameter that is screwed into the ground with a torque wrench as a quick method to determine soil strength. Who makes one and where would I find a technical discussion on the principals?

    electric constant flow injection thoughts?

There is increased interest among hot rodders in the old multi-carb intakes that use from 4 to 8 Stromberg 97 carburetors. Since these are pre-war, prices are from $150 to $175 each rebuilt so any complete setup with manifold, linkage, and scoops or filters will run over $1000. EFI throttle...
