I have asked this question in onther forum with no luck, so I will try it here.
I inherited shock test equipment that is very crude, but the company has been using it for years. The vibrator is fasten to a patio paver and in turn sits in a wooden box full of sand. The wood, sand, and patio...
I inherited shock test equipment that is very crude, but the company has been using it for years. The vibrator is fasten to a patio paver and in turn sits in a wooden box full of sand. The wood, sand, and patio paver are insulators, can they generate a static charge; are they ESD save? The...
I found this helpful introduction article on random vibration for electronic packaging if anybody is interested. The site is “http://www.electronics-cooling.com/html/2005_august_techbrief.html”

Hi guys/gals
I did not get any responses in the "Heat Transfer and Thermal dynamics" forum so I want to try here.
I wanted to ask if there are any ProE thermal users in this forum and if you like the package. What are the pros and cons of ProE Thermal in your application? My application...
Hi guys/gals
I wanted to ask if there are any ProE thermal users in this forum and if you like the package. What are the pros and cons of ProE Thermal in your application? My application would be to use it for electronic packaging from the junction temp of the device to heat sink and...
Power Semiconductors With 5% Duty Cycle
I’m doing some heat transfer analysis on power semiconductors with a 5% duty cycle at continues pulse. I know that for preliminary the Average Power (heat) dissipated will be Peak Power x Duty Cycle. Because it is 5% duty cycle, the device will heat up...
“There are a lot of [science and engineering] jobs going to individuals with an associate’s degree and some with only a high school diploma.”

This scares me that people with out the proper education level are doing engineering...
I’m doing some natural convection heat transfer analysis on a plate. I know how to find the “Q” due to natural convection, but I’m only interested in a part of the plate. For question sake, if the plate is 5 inches by 5 inches in the vertical orientation (the whole plate is exposed to air) and...
A question was posed to me about shock. In the time domain (G vs time) at the beginning of the time window, it would show high amplitude (high Gs) for the higher frequencies (The number of crossings at the beginning of the time window is more than later in the time window) and lower amplitude...
In the USA, are we still doing considerable R&D for future markets? I have gotten into a debate with a fellow engineer and he feels that the US still does a lot of R&D for future markets and that is our edge over the third world countries. I feel that we have become complacent or over cautions...
I have been thinking of consulting, but the field I’m in (electronic packaging/vibration and heat transfer analysis) is pretty much established with its own experts. So I’m kind of looking for another field to transfer my skills. I have been reading that nanotechnology is the wave of the...
Ladies and Gents,
Im looking for a used Harvard Thermal “TAS” manual to buy, does anybody have a copy to sell?
Thanks guys

I will be taking the PE Mech this Oct. Can you give me some insight to the exam? Was it like the sample exam? For the guys who took the PE Mech, was the PPI MERM enough for the exam, if not what other books were needed? How did the morning section go, were they all separate questions? Was...
Ladies and Gentlemen:
I will be taking the PE Mech exam this October. So I’m pretty much new in the “PE World”. My question is insurance. I know that insurance is needed just incase something goes wrong with your design, and it will cover the accident just as long you are still paying for...
I just wanted to check my thinking. In Pro Mechanica, when I do a random vib, I can get a profile in a^2/Hz (a=acceleration in/s^2) Vs Hz, but I want to convert a^2/Hz into G^2/Hz. So for example, if I have 1x10E6 a^2/Hz and convert it to G^2/Hz, will the following make sense:
a=386.4...
Hi guys,
Im looking for thermally and electrically conductive rubber. Does anybody know a manufacture who makes such a product?
Thanks for your time!

Power Spectral Density, once I have a profile from doing a random vibration (either from test or pro/mechanica), does anybody have a great way to find the area under the curve either using excel or mathcad, or equations to calculate down to acceleration, velocity, and displacement at frequency...
Can you simulate G load cases by manipulating gravity loads? For example if a unit is experiencing 50Gs and then set the gravity to 50 x 386.4 in/s^2 = 19320 in/s^2, will I get the desired effects of 50Gs on the unit?
I've started doing vibration fixtures for electronic equipment. I learned that many people are using Magnesium alloy instead of aluminum. Can anybody tell me what are the advantages in using magnesium?
Thank in advance for your insight!
