I am trying to get a feel for what the low temperature (-15 Deg C / 5 Deg F) Charpy V notch energy for 1038-1045 steel when quench and tempered to 30-32 HRc.
I have conducted Charpy impact testing to normalized 1045 before and achieved only 6-7 J @ -15 Deg C. Will Quench and Tempering to 30-32...
I have been asked a question that seems to have an easy, obvious answer answer, but is it this simple.
If I have two parts that have a reasonable Charpy impact strength ( "A" joules) loaded in tension and wish to connect them with another part with a lower impact strength ( "B" joules), is it...
I have recently received some 4140 investment cast sample parts from our Chinese supplier, and although they looked good, failed in a very brittle manner. Investigation revealed that the parts we in fact not heat treated.
I am about to test them again after a proper quench and temper to...
A friend is making up some replacement pins and bushes from the front end of a skid steel loader.
The worn ones are about 38mm OD (1 1/2") and come up at 60 HRc measured at the surface and 50 HRc at the core.
Obviously the originals were case hardened to get up to 60 HRc, but what material...
I know it is pretty common to form a boss in sheet metal that is then tapped. For instance in say 1mm thick steel to produce a boss that might be 3-4mm high that is then tapped M3.
I want to use this process to put an M20 female thread into a 10 or 12mm thick plate, achieving around 16mm of...
Hi,
We have been running Catia now for about 12 years, initially V4 and then V5 (ME2 & MD1)from about 2000. Most of our design work is solid modelling assemblies with a little surfacing.
We are now considering whether to upgrade to V6, or alternately drop Catia and go across to SolidWorks...
I am trying to design a simple cantilever spring that needs to bend through 90 degrees. Do I use simple cantilever beam theory to determine the stress?
I am going to use 1055-1065 spring steel approximately 0.5mm thick. The beam will be approx 50mm long and 4mm wide.

Does anyone know what the difference in cost is for Polypropylene and Nylon66 raw material in the USA?
I have some parts made in the United States at the moment in PP, and am going to ask if it is possible to use PA66. Before I do, I would like to know what sort of premium I am going to be...
Last year I posed a question in a thread regarding a compression spring that was failing under cyclic testing. thread693-193540
For those that tried to help, I thought you might be interested how I eventually solved the problem.
I eventually realised that during the compression, the spring is...
What is the best way to determine the grade of plastic used on a particular injection moulded part?
If it were steel I would have it spectro-analysed, but I don't know if there is a way to do this to plastic.
I have seen the charts with the smoke characteristics when burned, but these don't...
I have a compression spring made from range 2 wire and stressed to about 620 MPa shear stress. The ends are squared and ground.
These springs have been in use in our products for 3-4 years and we see no failures in the field at all. However when I put our product into a cyclic test program...
We are currently looking to upgrade our hardware from 4 year old IBM E-Pro's (666MHz P3, 512MB RAM, 32 MB Fire GL Video card), to IBM M-Pro's (3GHZ P4, 1GB RAM, 128MB Video).
To justify the upgrade I need to show the performance improvement that we will achieve. Does anyone know where I can get...
What are the low temperature (-30 deg C) effects on ISO 898.1 Grade 8.8 bolts? ISO898.1 specifies a charpy impact strength of 30 J when tested to ISO 83, which I assume is conducted at a low temperature, but I don't know what that temperature is though. Any advise would be a great help.
