Does anyone know why the profession of Civil Engineering is called “CIVIL”. I don’t buy the argument that the British used it to describe civilian in lieu of “army” engineer. In Greek Civil is called "Politikos". "Politis" menas "Citizen" and "Politikos" politician.....
Is there a MNFR for special connectors other than Simpson Strong Tie? We have some weird connections and we like to avoid designing and fabricating special hangers & connectors.
Thank you
I have a beam spaning between two columns 14 OC that supports two (2) pipes. The pipes move due to thermal expansion and contraction and even thought the friction has been reduced, it is still high enough to induce some torsion. The question is: Can a stiffened or unstifenned beam connection...
I have a composite tube column (fab'd from plates) that I would like to clamp down with B-B channels during the concrete placement. The clamps (ties) are not welded to the plate column. I have modeled the plate but I am having dificulty with the clamp (B-B Channels)because it is only capable of...
Is there a min/max thicknes of grout that we can place behind a wall plate supporting a cantiliver beam with relatively small loading? When does bending on the anchors becomes a problem?

According to AISC 9th edition (ASD) section "I5" concrete below the top of the steel deck shall be neglected when determining section properties and in calculating "Ac" for Equation (I4-1).However, the manual is not clear about the location of the concrete NA. In other words, is the rib height...
I have a member that I like to support after some deflection takes place. Is this possible? How do I model it without imposing a load on the member?
Thank you
We have a very hot 12" diameter pipe (960 deg F) supported by the steel structure. Is there a way to determine the heat dissipation or how long the supporting steel has to be to avoid heating the structural steel.

I HAVE A PLATE UNDER BENDING SUPPORTED WITH ONE ACHOR BOLT. I LIKE TO SIMULATE THE -Y CONCRETE SUPPORT UNDER THE PLATE BY RELEASING EVERYTHING (+/- X, Z, MX, MY, MZ & +Y)EXCEPT THE -Y REACTION. THEREFORE, THE RESULTING COUPLE WILL BE RESISTED BY ONE EDGE OF THE PLATE (-Y)AND THE BOLT (+Y).

We have HSS20x8x3/8 member welded on top and bot with full penetration welds and approximately 75% of the webs(sides). Can this be considered a full moment connection?
We have an 11-12 thick SOG for an Airplane Hangar (main gear loads 80k to 90k). The owner would like to install radiant heating. According to the HVAC salesman the tubes will be about 3/4" and they will be resting on the reinforcement. Even though they try to avoid crosiing any joints they...
Does anyone have any information regarding weight (load) distribution on the landing gears of aircraft? I am in the process of designing a hangar facility and the load distribution is critical.
I was told that the load on the main gear of a "Bombardier Chalenger" aircraft is approx 95% or...
Lately I have been reading very interesting threads about "PEMB Foundation Design". For small buildings the lateral loads can be handled but for large buildings it can be a dificult task for someone with little or no experience in this area. ASCE/SEI offers a seminal sometime in January 2008...
We have an existing steel column W12x106 that has lost about 3/8" to 1/2" of its flange thickness (tf=1"). The column is loaded. Any recommendations on how to reinforce it without shoring will be appreciate it.
