Insert - Mirror Components - Mirrored Group not constrained

I'm creating a u-bolt sub-assembly. I've got a FW, LW, & Nut all mated to each other & concentric to one leg. It's still free to move coaxially on the leg. I then mirror the hardware about a plane of symmetry and the new components show up on the other leg. However, they have no mates and can...

    BOM Questions

I'm in the exploratory phase of learning SWX. In playing with BOM's, I've come up with a couple questions that I can't find answers to. 1) On the Insert->Tables menu in my drawing, the Excel-based BOM is grayed out. Any ideas why? The standard BOM seems to perform as expected. 2) The part...

SWX Newbie - Dim's to Outside of Arcs Rather than Ctr

I'm a brand-new SWX user (with prior experience on SE 6 & Inv 6). I was fiddling with the slot feature from the palette and noticed something I've not been able to do myself: They appear to have dimensioned the slot-length directly from the outside tangents of the two arcs. Whenever I try, it...

Programmatically adding cells to a named range

Can someone tell me how to programmatically add cells to a named range? For example, I'd like to begin at cell C3 and the next 3 sets of cells space 4 rows apart and the corresponding set in column H ending up with a named range containing C3, H3, C7, H7, C11, H11, C15, H15. I'll ultimately...

How to make construction lines on a unique layer?

I'd like to redefine the standard "construction line" button so that my construction lines are automatically created on a layer named "Construction" whose color is red and linetype is phantom. In doing so, I'd like to keep my current layer set to whatever it is when the...

    Dimscale in PS vs MS

I've got a file created by somebody else. I then dropped in a PS layout that I've been using. When I go to dimension the model from paperspace, the dimension is not scaling to model space - it's just showing the actual paperspace distance. If I do my dimension in model space, then the dimension...

Excel - Defining Text Alignment During Data Entry

In 123 I was able to establish the alignment of my text during data entry by using ' ^ " for left, center, and right aligned text. I've looked through Excel help and didn't see anything like this. Does anybody know if this exists in Excel?

From a solid model to PS orthographic drawing

I'm fairly new to AutoCAD (more experienced with Solid Edge and Inventor) and totally self-taught and there's something I've been struggling with for which I'd love some guidance. I do most of my design work with solids and then use SOLPROF to create the visible and hidden views in a paperspace...

    Joining Copper Tubing

I'm new to a company that makes elbows out of copper tubing (1" through 6"). It is currently done by manual TIG welding. Looking at the labour cost and the sketchy quality is making me wonder what is the state-of-the-art in such applications. Is it TIG welding done by machine or is...

    First Use of Threads

One of my colleagues was wondering aloud when the first threads were used for mechanical fastening, clamping, or positioning. The first "thread" use I thought of was Archimedes and his screw-pump but he was thinking about threaded fasteners or power screws. Anybody know?

    Excel: SIN(PI()) not = 0????

Does anybody know why I'd get Sin(pi()) = 1.22515 E-16 and Sin(2*pi()) = 2.4503 E-16 ? For what it's worth, I get the same thing with Sin(radians(180)). Sin(0), Sin(pi()/2), and Sin(3*pi()/2) all work. I get the same type of problem (different magnitude and shifted 90°) with cosine.

When do you earn a bonus?

I'd like feedback on this situation: I started working for a company late in the year. On the last day before the holiday shut-down, the boss circulated and presented people with their bonus checks. I didn't get one. I'd only been there for a couple of months so I figured that I'd not earned...

    Writing my own Excel functions

Hi there. I'm wondering if it can be simply explained how to write my own functions in Excel. I know how to code in VBA but what I want is to be able have a custom function which behaves like all of the built-in Excel functions. Specifically, I do a lot of determination of volumes and...

Is it possible to sit for PE test even without the references?

Does anybody know if one can sit for the PE test even lacking the PE references required for licensing? I'm curious to know if I could sit for the test in an effort to objectively test my knowledge even though the system prevents me from being licensed.

Trimming to within .xxx of an entity

Hi there. Does anybody know of a means to trim to within a specified distance (say .1") of an entity rather than right up to it? The ways I do it now are: A) offset the cutting edge, trim, then delete the offset or B) Trim the entity to the cutting edge and then stretch the grip to an...

    Drawing slots

I routinely draw full-radius slots of various sizes. I typically draw a rectangle and then fillet each of the four corners to a radius half the width of the slot. Two questions: 1) Is there a way to fillet all four corners simultaneously? 2) Does anybody have a routine to automatically draw...

How to Purge Layers Created by Solprof

    "Hidden" view with solids

I'm working with the same file (all solids) on two different machines both running ACAD 2002. On one, when I'm in "Hidden" view, it does just that. I only see the visible edges of the solid parts. On the other machine, though, I also see a bunch of lines connecting various edges to...

    Environmental Engineering - Good Career?

I'm an under-employed ME who's looking at grad school. In my area there appear to be many more positions for the various CE disciplines than for ME's. I'm therefore considering a MS in CE. In speaking with the graduate advisor, he was very encouraging about the job prospects and stability of...
