I have a Lifting Beam that has two vertical chains coming off of it and one horizontal chain coming off it as well.
I have a load which i will be lifting and then tilting up a little bit with the horizontal chain. Let me layout with words where all the connections are.
Lug 1 - this will be...
I know this is a pretty stupid question...but i couldn't find a definition on the internet or in any of my books...what exactly is meant by 'Hot-Wrought'?
I want to use a material A576 Grade 1045 Hot Rolled for an 8" diameter round I need for a wheel.
But in the selection guide i am using, it...
Is A276 Type 316 Condition B a stainless steel that is produced/used much? I have called this out in a calculation and then come to find that our local stainless distributor does not stock it and has never heard of it being requested.
Does anybody stock it?
I was trying to avoid the more...
Greetings.
I have recently completed the calculations to determine the required Torque for a gearmotor to rotate a hook (and its 6000# load) on a lower hook block for a crane.
My question is how do I determine if the lower block is going to rotate/spin instead of the load rotating?
Here is...
When analyzing a clevis type connection...where the pin will be in double shear...at what point (distance between clevis supports) do you need to consider the bending stress in the pin?
For example...I have a typical application with a 3/4" pin seeing a load of 5.5 kips...the clevis...
I am trying to size a spring which will engage a ratchet into a ratchet wheel. There is a solenoid which diengages the ratchet (by overcoming the spring force) and then the spring will re-engage the ratchet when electricity is shut off.
Is there a 'rule of thumb' or Standard which suggests...
In a specification I am reviewing, under the Motor section there were two requirements which I don't fully comprehend...
1) Protection shall be provided against galvanic action between dissimilar metals by the use of gaskets, washers or other appropriate means.
As far as I know, there are no...
I am looking at the ASTM Standard A%^$.
I see that there are different types associated with the UNS Designations. Why does it go from a 600 series to an XM series...does the XM have a specific meaning?
Any good references to get more details on the way stainless is designated?
Thanks in advance
Does anybody have any information/experience with covers for troughs?
I have an application with an overhead crane being powered by a 2" diameter cable coming off of a horizontally fed cable reel. The cable will be pulled by the crane and will lay in a trough mounted just to the side of...

Can anybody give some guidance where CMAA came up with the equation for maximum stress allowed in the crane rail (Section 3.5.4.6 of CMAA 70-2000).
If you take the equation apart...they allow for 18ksi maximum stress, but the moment equates to PL/6 in lieu of a PL/4 (simply supported) or PL/8...
Greetings.
I have an application where a crane will be recovered in emergency situations with a 'recovery' wheel. The best design for this will utilize a splined shaft through the wheel (actually two drive wheels on either side of the crane span).
Anyhow, I was curious if I was calculating...
I am not too familiar with the inner workings of planetary gearboxes - I have always dealt with parallel shaft gearboxes.
Are most planetary gearboxes able to be 'back-driven'?
We want to reduce the braking torque on a drum and we are planning to mount a planetary gearbox to the drum with the...

I posted this message in the Bearings Forum...but didn't look like much activiy goes on there...is it allowed/rude to post the same message in more than one forum ??
Anyhow, I am looking for a flange bearing which has a housing of ductile cast iron or steel with a bore greater than...
Greetings.
I am looking around for a flange bearing with a housing which is either steel or ductile cast iron. I need the bore of the bearing to be 3.75" to 4.25".
The best I could find was a Browning flange bearing with a bore of 3.5". There are many others that I found with...
Has anybody ever used Cobra Solid Lubricants for bearings by UTA ? www.uniquetechnologies.com/techtext.htm
Wanted to get some feedback...the rep was in here and she made them sound perfect for an application we are looking at, but I tend to take everything with 'a grain of salt' that I hear...
I have been looking through RE Peterson by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. - 1974.
I can not find any stress conc. factors for a round section transferring into a rectangular section.
Has anybody published data in this regard ?
Thanks for any input.
Has anybody ever seen published data for the shearing force of wire rope ?
I have an application on an overhead crane in a nuclear facility where they would like to cut the wire rope and drop a load as a last ditch effort. So we are using an Enerpac Hydraulic Cutterhead as our means of cutting...

I am able to show the formulas I have embedded in my Excel worksheet by choosing the menus tools-options-view then click on Formulas.
My problem is that my formulas are pretty long and I would like to 'wrap' them in order for the printing to come out a lot nicer. Is there anyway to...

Is anybody aware of a Brake Manufacturer which has a standard disc brake (mounted to the back of a motor) with a shaft sticking out the back side ?
I need to put an overspeed device on that shaft...and the arrangement which I have prohibits me from placing it anywhere else.
